@douglassmackey As a former mechanic and working-class person I can say that ain't it. People have just been broke for far too long while living expenses (groceries, healthcare, fuel, rent) have exploded alongside the costs of garbage products put out by Chrysler.

@mahasr199 Yep. I have an Master's degree but the 2008 crash sent me right back to the family cabinet shop. At best, people in the trades were indifferent or couldn't stand the work. Never made great money, a lot of 1099/lack of benefits and injuries. Rich guys make money in their sleep.

Yet to meet a rich guy that put their kids into trade school. Which is surprising considering how often they talk about going into the trades.
Bitcoin Teddy@Bitcoin_Teddy

Mike Rowe: “We’ve been telling kids for 15 years to learn to code.” “Well, AI is coming for the coders.” “It’s not coming for the welders, the plumbers, the steamfitters, the pipefitters, the HVAC, or the electricians.” “In Aspen, I sat and listened to Larry Fink say we need 500,000 electricians in the next couple of years—not hyperbole.” “The BlueForge Alliance, who oversees our maritime industrial base—that’s 15,000 individual companies who are collectively charged with building and delivering nuclear-powered subs to the Navy … calls and says, we’re having a hell of a time finding tradespeople. Can you help?” “I said, I don’t know, man … how many do you need? He says, 140,000.” “These are our submarines. Things go hypersonic, a little sideways with China, Taiwan, our aircraft carriers are no longer the point of the spear. They’re vulnerable.” “Our submarines matter, and these guys have a pinch point because they can’t find welders and electricians to get them built.” “The automotive industry needs 80,000 collision repair and technicians.” “Energy, I don’t even know what the number is, I hear 300,000, I hear 500,000.” “There is a clear and present freakout going on right now. I’ve heard from six governors in the last six months. I’ve heard from the heads of major companies.”

@Duderichy Buying a Nissan Versa or a BMW with 150k miles is deeply unwise. Again, totally depends on the car. Generally, a used car in that 20k to 40k mile sweet spot w/ service records without a CVT transmission. Japanese car or Japanese/GM truck. Avoid Fiat, Chrysler and Minis.

@Duderichy It depends on the car. I worked as a mechanic. At a certain point, it makes no sense to hang onto them. I've got a 2007 Silverado that's at 175k miles and going strong. An '07 Dodge Ram? Probably not. I have a '56 Chevy too. That gets held onto/restored for obvious reasons.

@ruisranne @mtaibbi It's crazy. It was only a hard decision because everything seems to be falling apart. I'm happy with the good and the rough days with my son. I think a lot of people are projecting. I would've been fine without a child, but I'm glad it finally happened albeit later (42) in life.

@mtaibbi It seems to me that people who decide to not have kids really take it personally and become angry when people who have kids say how much more meaningful and joyful their lives became. Strange that.

I’m not trying to shame anyone into doing anything. I’m just saying having children has been a joyful experience.

@mtaibbi Not everyone is the same. People with kids should remember that when they try to shame others into having kids.

@mtaibbi We had a son in 2024. I was already 42, wife was 38. COVID and life happened. We don't regret it. Yes, the environment is horrible -- cost of living, labor protections (getting fired for being pregnant), geopolitical situation, failing infrastructure -- but I can't control that.

@iceaxehikes @Rainmaker1973 They were teaching manual drafting in the intro Jr. college classes in the early 2010s. I have a drafting certificate, know AutoCAD, but still draft on vellum. It's not totally dead and a lot of small firms or tradesmen (i.e., small custom cabinet shops) still draft by hand.

@Rainmaker1973 Drafting, offset printing, and typewriting classes were still taught in the early 80's when I was in Jr. High School. All three skills are basically obsolete now and have been for some time. Public schooling wasn't great in California in the 80's.

Office life before the invention of AutoCAD and other drafting software. Prior to the release of AutoCAD in 1982, engineering drawings were all done by hand using different grade pencils, erasers, T-squares and set squares.

@OD_RPG @FluentInFinance They don't know. They're investment people. Clueless. My dad ran a custom cabinet shop for 30 years. I worked there for a decade. Our cutter had a torn acl, lifting 4' X 8' sheets all day. No one made what those clowns are saying. Circa 2016, guys were making $20-$60 per hour.

@FluentInFinance Its the grueling work involved, from sweltering heat to freezing cold to unforgivable humidity. Nobody mentions that by age 50, 50% of tradesmen have permanent neck pain, busted knees, bad backs, rotatory pain, joint pains, etc.

@ZurdaDeDiego @Codie_Sanchez My family has been in the construction trades for decades. Father ran a custom cabinet shop, I worked there for years and he's still grinding away at it. The only people telling others to work in the trades are those who have no experience with them. No one liked it.

@Codie_Sanchez Blue collar always exaggerate and brag about would they “could” make if they owned their own business. I have cousins that are electricians in Texas. They’re always broke! 😂 Only Union tradesmen in the north or Midwest make good wages. Republicans hate unions in the south.

@Codie_Sanchez Please. My family has been in the trades for decades. Custom cabinetry. It's an absolute grind that rides the boom-and-bust cycles of the housing market. There are a lot better ways to make a living.

@TwittitNquittit @RepMGP 100%. From her fake student-loan forgiveness as being a war waged against welders, ICE funding and now this BS, I'm hoping someone primaries her. Not that things will get better; simply that she needs to find a real job. "Run up that Snap-on bill, Marie. Get back at the garage!"

Our fishermen in Southwest Washington have spoken loud and clear—sea lions in the Columbia River are decimating our salmon and steelhead runs. My provision to explore more cost-effective and efficient ways to remove these Corolla-sized vermin from our rivers and tributaries was just signed into law. I enjoyed brainstorming with SW WA fishermen on next steps to return our runs to their former glory.

@TwittitNquittit @RepMGP I think the Democrats transitioned to Reaganism by Bill Clinton. In the UK, Thatcher said her greatest achievement was Tony Blair. Marie is a special case. I went to grad school, but worked in my father's cabinet shops/auto garages. She does it under a faux-blue collar guise.

@jkierbel @realrobdurden Ed Herman gets lost in the mix. I like/read Parenti. It was simply difficult to find Inventing Reality years ago. If I recall correctly, used copies were over $100 and libraries didn't seem to have many copies. Gaye Tuchman and Ben Bagdikian were also influential.

They promoted Chomsky’s Manufacturing Consent to distract you from reading Parenti’s Inventing Reality, which was written years earlier and is far better.

@kyawzazaw @Andylanger I wouldn't recommend the libraries at this point either. I chased a guy out who was out of his mind and violent. That was it for me and my family. The Librarian there was burned out. It was a regular occurrence and upper management couldn't care less. I felt bad for him.

@aaronjmate I interviewed Chomsky and I've read most of his books on the political economy of the media two or more times. Big part of my thesis/education alongside Bagdikian, McChesney, Gaye Tuchman, Ed Herman, etc. That doesn't stop Chris Hedges from being right. He gets it.

Throughout his life, Noam Chomsky was mocked, sidelined, vilified, traduced, and smeared by the political establishment. Now in his last days, similar tactics are being used against him by members of the political left. I understand there are feelings of anger and betrayal over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, but some of the widely circulating claims made about him are outright false. I'm going to weigh in more when I have the time to address them in full.

Today marks 2 years of no longer consuming alcohol. I can definitely say that I do not miss the hangovers. I’ve learned to live more in the present & to enjoy the little things life offers. 1 day at a time. I am grateful for today.
