Today’s military strikes on Iran — carried out by the United States and Israel — mark a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression. Bombing cities. Killing civilians. I have a theory that because it took so much effort for analytics to become an acceptable prism through which we can interpret sports, stats wonks feel like it's a retreat to admit you can't develop informative modeling for things like going for it on 4th down

think ben johnson made the right decision not to go for two (even if they ended up losing)
the rams had 18 seconds and two timeouts left. if you score, they become hyper aggressive to get into field goal range where they could win the game
by kicking the XP, the rams got conservative and kneeled (even though probably still should have been aggressive)
