@DaoOfMorphy @CodyZervas Not only do people not know, they can't even tell the truth when asked. In theory a machine could show you faces until it can deduce what features you like based on your reactions, but what a person tells themself they like and what they respond to in the real world don't match

@CodyZervas Agreed that ML should be a good fit for matchmaking, but this is an exaggeration. ML can only measure 1000s of your preference if you can give it that data -- most humans don't know themselves that well! Similarly, ML can only find a perfect face if it has data on 1000s of women

It is actually ONLY through tech that you can deliver “unrealistic” matches. Doing so requires determining how your preferences differ from the market consensus. Most women like muscles but you like a dad bod. That’s your alpha. That’s how you punch above your league. The more you differ on each dimension, and on the more dimensions, the higher the ceiling on your theoretical best match. But in practice, a human matchmaker can only assess this roughly, with language, on a handful of dimensions. You can try to tell them “I like a face with mild canthal tilt and prominent zygomatic arch”, and they can do their best to hand-search through a few hundred people. You’ll be lucky if they find one that fits on just those two. But an ML algorithm can measure thousands of such preferences hyperdimensionally, then instantly compare them to millions of potential matches. It can find you the precise face you find most attractive in the world, and uniquely so. Human matchmakers might OFFER unrealistic matches, and their clients might even pay for the illusion that one of them will work out, but if you ask them about their hit rates, you’ll quickly see it’s a fantasy. Sorry Blaine. Matchmaking is a millennia-old institution. If this were a problem that was solvable without tech, we would have solved it already.
Blaine Anderson@datingbyblaine

My worry for the AI matchmaker thesis is that singles don't want realistic, good-on-paper matches. Customers hire me for matchmaking precisely because I deliver unrealistic matches they can’t get elsewhere. AI pairing sounds nice, but actually think about the UX. Would you pay for Hinge if all the aspirational hotties disappeared, and you could only see 1-2 profiles a computer has deemed “realistic” for you every month? Why do you think Raya has been so successful? No shade implied for the teams working on AI matchmakers. Everyone I’ve interacted with in that world seems smart, and I genuinely wish them success. I’m just skeptical that AI pairing meshes with how people actually date.

@Aella_Girl @elizaorlins Slightly off-topic, but I'm curious what your take is on initiating sexual activity with a partner who is asleep? To me it seems quite harmless and even sexy (assuming the people taking part know each other well) but it seems to be labelled assault in our current zeitgeist.

A website with 62 million monthly visitors is hosting 20,000+ videos of women being sexually assaulted in their sleep. And, it's completely legal. Here's why—and what has to change. 🔗👇

@revenant_MMXX I corrected teachers all the time and their responses were generally neutral to positive. Possibly my school district had a particular culture, but it was Bumfuck, Idaho, so not particularly high quality schools. My theory is that I just wasn't a little shit about it.

I realized teachers were mediocre idiots when we did presentations on the periodic table. I got aluminum. When I gave my presentation, I mentioned that the British pronunciation & spelling for aluminum was "aluminium." My teacher made a big show of telling me that I must have gotten it wrong. Natually, the class found this amusing and I felt very awkward for a moment. But, feeling put on the spot, I asked to look it up on the classroom computer. She used the Encyclopedia Britannica software or whatever it was we had, and there it was, right there. I'm lucky she didn't tell my parents to put me on prescription meth as punishment, and to her credit, she actually did apologize. But after that, every time I saw a teacher fumble for the answer key or push back on a student in an embarrassing way, I would think of that moment and back up the student, who would turn out to be right more often than not. I guess, in a way, you could say that this "built character" in that I learned early in life that people love to be confidently wrong and that most people shouldn't be taken at face value. Just because someone is in a position of "authority" or "prestige" doesn't mean they deserve to be there, especially not in a system like ours that lets ~100 IQ people serve as "educators." Still, I can only assume that people who vehemently defend public school must not have ever had experiences like these, themselves having been along for the ride with little opportunity for independent thought or revelations that they were smarter than their teachers.

@_makise_pudding @BEisenhart It was the most expressive and funny. Not the most attractive or most representative of my face. Believing that women only post selfies to look hot and for no other reason is an extremely porn-brained stance.

Being in your early 40s is weird, man. People around your age are in every stage of life. You have people who are grandparents. You have people who have newborns. You have people dating 25-year-olds. You have people celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary. Some of them look 60, and some of them look 30. All the bases are covered when you are in your early 40s.

@MoreOrLessAMess I start asking for this at age ~9, because I want to signal to my kids that the doctor is safe, and talking to them alone is normal. So by the time they're preteens they already feel comfortable asking the doctor about anything they might not want to bring to me.

@Agratefulheart_ @thruforestswild Can you say more about what you're afraid of? Bacterial contamination? The yeast competes with that. Plus, once you've fed it five times you're at less than half a percent of the original material. Just feed it for a week before you use it, it'll be fine.

If you conceptualize it as "doomscrolling", of course it's going to make you feel terrible to log on. But it's not doomscrolling to me. It's training. All the ragebait, slop, gooner material, bad memes, narcissistic displays, and outright bad information is an opportunity to hone your mind and practice your resilience. Don't let yourself be baited. Don't be emotionally trapped by the sticky flypaper of people desperate for your attention by any means necessary. Practice maintaining curiosity and passion, while honing your criticality and ability to regulate yourself. Because you need those skills, social media or not. Every time you go out into the world you're confronted with a blaring ads, stupid people, vampire eyes, unwanted stimuli, hollering and screeching pleas meant to drain you of your time and money and energy. It's important to be able to dive into that oozing mass of slop without letting it transform you into slop yourself.

@indexnforgetit With grocery prices where I live, an extravagant homemade lunch *could* approach half the cost of a decent lunch out. WHICH IS STILL HALF THE COST. People arguing with your numbers aren't coming up with explanations for how it could cost *more* than lunch out.

Do people really believe this or is it a cope for buying lunch every day? My lunch today: - Roast beef sandwich with swiss on bakery bread - Potato chips - Apple Total cost: Approximately $2.65

@Blind__Luck @indexnforgetit Not gonna lie, shopping at the supermarket nowadays.. homemade lunch is going to cost you $10 at minimum. And that’s if you have all of the already purchased compliments.

@Authw8 I shaved my legs for five years before it literally even occurred to me that it was optional and I could stop. I even heard jokes about how French women don't shave their pits and thought "gosh, must be nice to be French." I stopped the day I realized it was an option, at 19.

we're sort of trained to think of human behavior as people doing whatever they want, except for certain things we ban and say you aren't allowed to do. i think this can lead to a skewed perspective. it's closer to say that people assume all things are banned until they see someone else doing it, at which point they start to feel okay joining in. also, if a sufficient number of people start to do something, it starts to feel compulsory even if in theory it's optional. these tendencies result in more herd-like behavior around cultural practices than you would otherwise anticipate.

@Empty_America I'm with you. I don't want it to be 100 inside, but if it's 100 outside and I have to grocery shop at 67, that's really unpleasant. I keep my house at 76 as the compromise temperature, if it was just me I would set it at 82.

This is incredibly based. Spain apparently doesn't allow the A/C to be set below 80 degrees in public buildings. Imagine never being frozen and blasted by A/C, being able to walk into a restaurant without feeling that horrible clammy chill . . . Freedom.

@AlmostArchitekt Parts of Switzerland. Spain has rules against setting the air conditioning too low. UK will, reportedly, take away the rebates for heat pumps if they have cooling capability.
