Slagging off pubs in this climate when the pub trade is struggling as it is isn’t great. Pubs have had to adapt to changes in trends and the local community to survive. I wish we could all wind the clock back to good old days but they need as much support as we can.

The Labour MP Charlotte Nichols tells @AVMikhailova about her rape trial ordeal, and why she decided to waive her right to anonymity: It was more than a year after going to the police that Charlotte Nichols was asked to come into the station to look at photographs of her naked unconscious body. The officers on her case had initially told her that she would not need to, as she was “very clearly” identifiable in them and they did not want to cause her unnecessary hurt. But the Crown Prosecution Service said it was necessary as part of the charging process. And it was during the rape trial that followed that the MP found out that those photographs had been sent to 70 men. Even two years on from the trial, the existence of the photos, taken by the footballer she alleged raped her, continues to haunt her. “One of the things I found very difficult afterwards is, I don’t know who those 70 men are,” she says. During the trial, the man Nichols accused of raping her did not deny taking the pictures or sharing them, both without her consent His defence was that he was just “being a lad” and that he had not intended to cause her distress. He said he regretted sending pictures of Nichols’ naked breasts to his fellow football players and asking, “Anyone want a go?” The defence worked. A jury acquitted him both on the count of rape and over the sharing the images without consent. He had denied raping her, saying they had consensual sex three times and bit each other during intercourse, and in his evidence said they parted on good terms. Now when Nichols, 34, walks about her constituency meeting voters, occasionally the corrosive thought of “I wonder if they’ve seen it” creeps in. She also worries about them being posted on X or that one day “someone’s going to post them on some blog site hosted abroad […] and there’ll be nothing I can do about it”. thetimes.com/life-style/cel…

Barnet Council paid £31million to nurseries in ‘24/5.* According to Ofsted, a number of these nurseries are registered as ‘Closed’. This needs clarification; were any payments made after they had closed? ‘Play and Learn Day Nursery’ was paid £251k over 54 transactions. 🧵1/5

She genuinely doesn't see the problem. There's being thick and then there's this. Foreigners prefer to buy from their own people and they don't want what we do. They will often get things elsewhere. As the English are replaced in many areas, who is going to buy from the English owned shops? The shops eventually have to shut down and then a group of foreign people will take over and gradually take the whole area. Has happened here in my hometown in multiple areas. There's massive stores that have closed in my town centre such as M&S that are now somehow operated by foreign people selling pure tat, with the outside of the shop looking like downtown Baghdad. How can they afford such a premises in the centre of the town? Something to be looking into I think. But sure, it's just jealousy and a poor work ethic. Twat.

Another reason I love luxury hotels: I can create magical experiences for the people with me My wife and I asked my mom & aunt to join us in Rajasthan, India, for a tiger safari. One day, I spoke to the chef about creating a special dinner. I wanted specific dishes from where my mom & aunt were raised, plus my wife's favorite Indian dish. And I wanted them to be totally surprised with the beauty of the night The chef loved the idea. He helped me shape the menu and the event...watch the video. I will never forget this (Oberoi Ranthambore)

Luxury hotel pricing is utterly bewildering if you aren't the target market I recently spent ~$2,400 for 5 days at a Japanese property. Breakfast included $150 property credit, etc That wouldn't cover a single day at a luxury hotel that I usually stay at (e.g., Aman, Oberoi, Rosewood) What could make a hotel worth that much?
🤝@xPeaceLandBread

Staying at a 5 star hotel for the first time in my life cause the Ritz in Chengdu is $240 a night compared to $975 in Dallas and everything about this experience is totally blowing my mind.

@SANB13573113 Grok it. "NHS receptionist can expect a £50k+ inflation-linked pension plus lump-sum and death-benefit perks thanks to the generous CARE revaluation and employer contributions. To buy exactly the same package privately you would need to accumulate £1.2–£1.7 million."

To save a private pension equivalent to that of an NHS receptionist, you'd need a pot of about £1.5 MILLION. This is: outrageous, unjust & completely unaffordable. Taxation is theft.

Hellish day in A&E. The doctors and nurses are working flat out but the constant stream of patients is just too much. When I was a kid if you went to A&E you saw people with broken arms and bloody eye patches, things cut off or sticking out of their head. Today it was just people who couldn't get a GP appointment. Why do we not have enough doctor's surgeries in this country? Is it financially unviable to run one, too expensive to become a GP, or no longer a sought after career? What the hell is going on?

LSE Professor earning over 100k a year will have a very good pension pot - I worked at the LSE their Professors never leave the Academic/Political bubble & I mean never. Thinks a 70 year old man in Stoke on Trent who has worked on a building site since he was 16 shouldn't have £12,500 a year to live on.

The UK triple lock is the singlest stupidest policy in the entire Western world, and the most damaging to the future of a country. Of course, it is also untouchable and almost undiscussed in the UK press. @mattyglesias does a big favour to the UK public here.

£31 for “a moment to reflect” seems rather pricey. Growing up in Westminster, on rainy days I used to play in these cloisters for free, make brass rubbings of the wonderful inscriptions (the shop sold the wax crayons to do so, it was encouraged not illicit) and absorb the historic and peaceful atmosphere. Now a child’s ticket costs £14 and brass rubbings are banned. The Church of England seems to be happier being a money making museum than a cornerstone of our cultural and religious heritage. And with prices that high, no wonder they have to advertise for people to go.
Westminster Abbey@wabbey

The Abbey's cloisters are at their most peaceful in the early morning. This Lent, take a moment to reflect as you follow in the footsteps of the medieval monks of Westminster, exploring the cloisters accompanied by the trickling sounds of the fountain and the bells calling people to morning prayer. Conclude your walk in College Garden and listen to the beautiful sound of birdsong as the Abbey awakes to start a new day.

Did anyone else notice how they didn’t give ANY stats on the number of child deaths caused from SUV drivers? This is a made-up tax because the TFL are broke and need money. The roads are all 20mph, there’s ZERO safety concern. On top of that, we already pay £12.50 ULEZ fee and £18 congestion charge. And now another tax? Meanwhile, Sadiq is chauffeured around in a taxpayer-funded armoured Range Rover, one of the biggest SUV’s of them all. Rules for thee, not for he!
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan@MayorofLondon

Children hit by an SUV when walking and cycling have a 77% higher chance of being killed than when hit by a smaller passenger car. That rises to 209% more chance of being killed by an SUV for kids under the age of nine. That's why I've asked @TfL to do more research on the growing impact of supersized SUVs in our city.

Since I post most my life online... wins and struggles This morning we got up to go to church I was in the kitchen drinking my morning glass of water. My wife yelled, I need water. So I started filling her a glass Then she screamed, everything is black, I cant see I sprinted to the room, right as I entered she fainted blackout. I caught her. Her body went limp, her eyes rolled back, her mouth opened and life flashed before my eyes. Its a picture I never want to re-live I sprinted for my phone to call 911 when I came back into the room she was awake, but limp. I held her, I prayed over her We landed in the ER for the next 7 hours While we were there a "code white" eta 5 minutes came across the speakers, I watched nurses scrambling. I googled code white - child with life threatening Within 5 minutes I heard the screams of a mother I never want to hear again. Whaling and Weeping. I was supposed to be at church, hands high singing praises to a God for everything good in my life. Now I am in the ER asking God to give me the same strength to sing the same praises Thats when faith becomes real So what happened? We dont know. All tests and blood work came back clear They did give her 2L of liquids and she still hasn't urinated - so possible severe dehydration Her body hasn't recovered from our car accident, she hasn't felt good, low appetite We think it just all caught up with her. Now we battle the fear of it happening again. She doesnt want to be alone, I dont want to leave her. If you are the praying type, pray for us. Pray for a family who lost a child today in the ER Much Love, Shawn
