@ScrewXandElon @AdamKinzinger It does matter more. Because people in close proximity have much different issues and agendas that need representation than those in rural county, usa

@samshirazim What is the point of specifying laws and constitutional provisions for the amendment process if they are not followed? The “big picture” here is this amendment has, though every step of the process, bent or outright ignored the legal/constitutional process.

Legal issues often come down to framing There are technical legal ?s in Virginia redistricting But majorities in General Assembly approved referendum twice Then majority of voters approved it Does VA Supreme Court focus on big picture or the details? That might decide case
Eliza Orlins@elizaorlins

I read the full court order on Virginia's redistricting. A judge didn't pause the vote. He declared it void from the beginning—seven independent constitutional violations. Everyone is either celebrating or panicking. Almost nobody has read the order. I did. Full breakdown below:

@Hokieheye @robbie_vb @oconnor_reports @SenLouiseLucas Actually she didn't. She only made this push because she feels Virginia Republicans over 20 years ago made it so she couldn't get a Congressional seat. They are all gone now and she's older than dirt. Lol Ain't a win when the race ended years ago

Virginia Senate has turned into a long debate over redistricting. Sen. Peake gives Sen. Lucas props for her social media game but adds: "It aint gonna be 10 effin one." Lucas just laughs.

@neoagrarian @oconnor_reports Trump started this in Texas and btw national democrats proposed a nationwide ban on partisan gerrymandering but all republicans are against it. So democrats are responding in kind to republicans.

@GlenSturtevant @ReevesVA What do you say to the argument that the voters decided to vote yes? Unlike, Texas that gerrymandered their districts by legislative process.

My speech on the Senate floor this morning. The people who will have to live under the consequences of this map, including many in my district, turned out and fought against gerrymandering. But the dark money from out of state, special interest groups, and DC politicians barely dragged this amendment over the line. Now this moves from the ballot box to the courthouse. The question now is whether the Supreme Court of Virginia will enforce the rule of law.

‼️ Last night while you were sleeping, Senate Republicans passed a blank check of $70 BILLION dollars to fund ICE (with ZERO reforms added). Democrats offered amendments to use this money to fund health care, school meals, childcare, and reverse Republican cuts to SNAP and food assistance. Republicans blocked Every. Single. One. The Big Ugly Bill 2.0 will now come to the House. As you know, I am a HELL NO.

It's void per Virginia's constitution. That would not be the same case for other states because... wait for it... they don't have the same state constitution as Virginia.
MM @adgirlMM

@MeidasTouch Cool. If it's void in Virginia for being "unconstitutional" - then it's void in Texas and void in California too, right? Or it just unconstitutional when Republicans lose at their own game?

@allenanalysis To anyone interested in an intellectually honest concersation: Constitutions are not amended by mere a small popular vote manority. There are more requirements that were not fully met.

Let me explain what just happened in Virginia. Yesterday, 2.5 million Virginians voted. They passed a redistricting amendment 50.7% to 49.3%. Today, one judge threw out every single vote. 🧵

Weeks of attacks. Millions of dollars spent misrepresenting my position — and President Obama’s — on this referendum. Virginia voters saw through it anyway.

NoVA just made mortal, lifelong enemies out of the rest of the state, and this will remain the case even if the referendum is struck down. The consequences will be decades-long... at a minimum. If you didn't want that, you should have warned against this move.

@ProjectVirginia Does that mean NoVa can keep the billions its gives away to keep RVA roads paved, schools built, and the millions on welfare fed? Nova can cut the cord on all that? RVA is cool with their taxes tripling for half the services they already receive? Do tell more.
