“There is no rule of the Constitution or the law in our country at this time. Instead, it is under the rule of ‘Asim Law’. Dr. Yasmin Rashid, an elderly cancer survivor, has been imprisoned merely for refusing to abandon Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Bushra Begum too has been kept in solitary confinement solely to exert pressure on me. What kind of law is this, where those who renounce PTI are granted amnesty, while those who remain loyal to my ideology face relentless persecution? We prefer death over accepting slavery. Asim Munir is inflicting every form of cruelty upon me and my wife. No political leader’s family has ever been subjected to such treatment. I wish to make it absolutely clear once again: no matter what they do, I will neither bow down nor submit to them. My message to the nation is this: nations that embrace the clear and fearless principle of ‘freedom or death’ cannot be stopped from achieving true independence and progress. Only such principled nations ultimately prevail with honor. I also wish to make it clear that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf will hold no talks either with the Form-47 government or with the Establishment. There is no point in negotiating with a puppet government whose prime minister operates under a policy of ‘I will let you know after asking’. Negotiations are futile also because every time we have engaged in dialogue, the oppression against us has only intensified. All power rests in the hands of one man at this time: Asim Munir, who can go to any extent to extend his hold on power. Decisions regarding any negotiations will be made by our allies in the Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Aain Pakistan: Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas. All PTI office-bearers, parliamentarians, members of the Insaf Lawyers Forum, and senior lawyers must approach the High Courts and refuse to leave until hearing dates are set, because both my and Bushra Begum’s cases are being deliberately prolonged, with hearings not being scheduled, to ensure that we remain in prison. Everyone knows there is no substance in these cases and that they will eventually collapse; therefore, hearings are intentionally being withheld. I have complete trust in Salman Akram Raja. All party-related instructions and meeting lists will be communicated through him. Imran Khan’s solitary confinement and inhumane detention conditions must end, UN expert says GENEVA – The UN Special Rapporteur on torture, Alice Jill Edwards, Friday urged the Government of Pakistan to take immediate and effective action to address reports of inhumane and undignified detention conditions of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, warning that they could amount to torture and other inhuman or degrading treatment. “I call on Pakistani authorities to ensure that Khan’s conditions of detention fully comply with international norms and standards,” Edwards said. “Since his transfer to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on 26 September 2023, Imran Khan has reportedly been held for excessive periods in solitary confinement, confined for 23 hours a day in his cell, and with highly restricted access to the outside world,” she said. “His cell is reportedly under constant camera surveillance.” The Special Rapporteur stressed that prolonged or indefinite solitary confinement is prohibited under international human rights law – and when it extends longer than 15 days, it constitutes a form of psychological torture. “Khan’s solitary confinement should be lifted without delay. Not only is it an unlawful measure, extended isolation can bring about very harmful consequences for his physical and mental health,” she said. According to information received, Khan is not permitted outdoor activity or interaction with other detainees and is unable to join communal prayers. Visits from lawyers, family members and others authorised by the courts are frequently interrupted or ended prematurely. Imran Khan is held in a small cell that lacks natural light and adequate ventilation. Temperatures reportedly become extreme in both winter and summer, and poor air circulation leads to foul odours and insect infestations. As a result, he has reportedly suffered nausea, vomiting, and noticeable weight loss. “Anyone deprived of liberty must be treated with humanity and dignity,” the expert said. “Detention conditions must reflect the individual’s age and health situation, including appropriate sleeping arrangements, climatic protection, adequate space, lighting, heating, and ventilation.” Imran Khan, aged 72, has a history of significant health issues, including a serious spinal injury from a 2013 accident and gunshot wounds from a 2022 assassination attempt. “Khan has reportedly been denied adequate medical attention,” Edwards said. “I urge the authorities to allow a visit by his personal physicians.” The Special Rapporteur has raised Imran Khan’s situation with the Government of Pakistan and will continue to follow developments.
