Notice @PFNeronha's inherent belief that there’s some entity called “the RI GOP” that can do things like generate candidates, complain, and be feckless.  There is no such entity. Saying “the party should run somebody” is like saying “the market should open a store,” “the neighborhood should fix the playground,” or “the church should be more active.”  Flesh-and-blood people have to (1) identify the need, (2) accept responsibility, (3) marshal the resources, and (4) take action. Neronha's Democrat Party has stitched things up so tightly, in Rhode Island, that the incentives to run as a Republican are not in the interest of anybody who has other worthwhile uses for their time and resources, unless they have also a missionary zeal. And people with missionary zeal who can appeal to a majority in a general election are very rare. Maybe even more rare are people in a majority party who prioritize the health of the polity over the convenience of easy dominance. Don't expect, therefore, anybody on the current Democrat field to (knowingly) improve RI's political health if it means opening the door to competition.
