One of the best investments I made this year was learning to type correctly, finally graduating from the tribe of two- or three-finger typists. It’s been a solid reminder that you can unlearn and relearn just about anything. I’d been typing “freestyle” for about 20 years, mostly with a few fingers and zero technique. I skipped typing classes back then. Between impatience and the belief that it wasn’t necessary for what I wanted to do, I picked up some impressively bad habits. I was fast enough (decent words per minute), but far from efficient. And I made a lot of noise while typing. My keyboard sounded like it owed me money. Earlier this year, I purchased an ergonomic keyboard, and it quickly became clear that the fancy design would only pay off if I actually typed in the way it was intended to be used. So I decided to learn properly this time using typing.com. I spent hours practicing. I’ve probably logged 40 to 50 hours by now. It slowed me down at first. It was uncomfortable. I was reprogramming my fingers while still trying to meet deadlines. It meant killing off bad habits in real-time. But it’s been worth it. I’ve always admired people who could type with all their fingers, like it was some secret superpower. Now, I’m one of them.
