What is the point of hotel check-in desk people anymore? Why isn't this 100% automated? Verify your ID, pay, get entry code. Why are humans still doing this?

@BenjaminDEKR Book Hilton Hotels. You provide your ID once and then you check in on the app and use the key on the app. I do all I can to avoid people.

Here is my most recent interaction: "So your name is ---------?" Yes. "And you reserved from Date to Date?" ......Yes. "Hmmmm, yes, I see your reservation." .....Ok "And that will be on (credit card you provided already)?" Yes that's why I provided it "Yes here is your room key. To go up to the third floor, you will use the elevator and press 3." I understand

I’m seeing, yet again, this surge of hatred for the Boomer generation. I’m a late season Boomer, born in 1961; I’ve worked for nearly 50 years, have been in the same profession for 37 years, I’ve routinely worked 45-60 hours a week. I don’t get why we are so vilified.

Whoever decided that Arizona was the best place for data centers must be absolutely braindead. Up to 120° for over half of the year. Genius. 🙄

I never understood the obsession with dresses that have pockets, it feels weirdly millennial and performative don’t you have purses? tote bags?

I don't know which angry boomer needs to hear this, but Gen Xers do know cursive. I know a lot of what happened back then was a wine cooler and Virginia Slim smoke fog of memory, but we did in fact have to learn cursive. And I will add we used it to forge your name on our permission slips when you were to hung over to sign them. Sincerely, Gen X

@rationalaussie @maxroberts001 @eevblog Houses are built in different decades, with different equipment. You would have to make too many different models to make it effective. That's why apprentiship time is mandatory.

Construct a physical RL environment like they do in software. It's all the same shit. Literally create a training course, in real life, with simulated situations that cover 99% of cases, and pair it with a couple of exams the person must take. That's all you need. You don't need a 5 year bullshit course or whatever. Just a stringent test where you can't fake competence

The bigger question here - and the real problem - is why does it take 5 years to become an electrician? You're seriously gonna tell me the smartest white collar workers (soon to be unemployed) are effectively prohibited from getting employed as a lucrative tradesperson during the final period where human employment even matters, because of regulations? It's insane. A smart person could turbo charge this in 6 months. The West needs fast-track trades programs.
Jason Shuman@JasonrShuman

The US needs 500,000 new electricians this decade. Apprenticeships take 5 years. Microsoft’s Brad Smith says it’s the #1 thing slowing data center expansion. The AI bottleneck isn’t chips. It’s the trades.

My longtime family doc in Nov: Exciting news! I am moving to concierge medicine! For an annual fee of $5,000 I can remain your primary care physician. (Sick visits extra.) My longtime family doc in March: So… I still have a few open spots, in case you want one.

@molmccann @SouthwestAir Pack 2 diaper bags. I agree they shouldn't have changed your seats, but whining about 1 diaper bag kinda makes me think there are at least 2 toddlers in your passenger list.

Flying back from Naples on @SouthwestAir with twins and a toddler. We booked well in advance and chose our seats. SWA has—without notice—changed our seats. As a result, we are now separated on this flight. We already have to sit in separate rows with the twins, but we need to be in consecutive rows because we have ONE diaper bag with bottles, etc. I preferred open seating, but if SWA wants to force assigned seats, it can’t just move us around.

Anonymous: My manager just denied my PTO for my son’s Spring Break because she is going on a cruise that week and she “can’t find anyone else to work” because another coworker is also taking off for their child’s break … I gave a months notice and already booked the vacation. My son is very excited to spend time with us during those few days. What’s the next move?

@drvolts A few years ago UCLA did a study on room usage. I often think about how useless a porch/dining room is. Why hasn't there been more innovation around how people ACTUALLY use their space in their homes? wsj.com/articles/SB100…

So, yeah, I do a lot of Zillow surfing to relax. And some of the design choices of contemporary homes baffle me. This house has something 99% of new houses are missing: a mud room! Who wants to tromp straight from outside into a living room? zillow.com/homes/for_sale…

Can you imagine time traveling back to the 1990s, when doctors were taught that pain was the 5th vital sign? There was a time when clinicians couldn’t tolerate watching a patient sit in agony. If someone came into the ER with kidney stones, appendicitis, or a broken bone, relieving pain was part of the priority. Somewhere along the way the culture shifted. Now people can sit in waiting rooms doubled over in pain while everyone around them pretends not to hear it. Compassion used to be the baseline.

This area on the map is forty times larger than California's Central Valley and has far less agricultural diversity for the table. Corn for ethanol and wheat for animal feed might be necessary, but they aren't what we directly consume. California's Central Valley, on the other hand, produces over 90% of the country's almonds, pistachios, walnuts, raisins, carrots, grapes for the table (not for wine), kiwis, nectarines, plums, prunes (i.e., processed plums), and apricots. It also produces around 70% of the nation's peaches and 25% of its rice.

Permanent standard time would mean giving up an hour of light after work for 9 months of the year, to get a little bit of extra light between 9 am and 10 am in the morning in winter, when you're at work anyway. Utter insanity. Permanent daylight saving time is the only option.

It seems pretty undeniable that people in their 30s/40s today look way younger than people the same age did even 20 years ago. Why is this happening, is it just better cosmetic treatments? What are the second order social effects?

Tengo 41. Mi hija decidió no ir a la universidad. Siempre ahorré para eso. Horas extra. Fines de semana sin descanso. Vacaciones canceladas. Desde que terminó el colegio dice que quiere “encontrarse”. Viajar. Trabajar en algo creativo. No seguir “el camino tradicional”. Es mi vida me repite. No la tuya. Al principio intenté convencerla. Luego discutir. Después suplicar. No desperdicies tu futuro.
