2 out of every 3 new HIV infections among adolescents in Uganda occur in girls. Let that sink in. Adolescent girls & young women are 4x more likely to be living with HIV than boys of the same age. The new government policy requiring compulsory Sickle Cell screening for newborns must be applauded, and supported, especially for us from Busoga, where prevalence of the disease is very high.

UPDATE: The Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Dr Diana Atwine, has officially launched a nationwide mandatory newborn screening programme for sickle cell disease in Uganda.
