Freedom of expression in Somaliland is under serious threat. Officials are openly threatening individuals, including human rights advocates, simply for expressing opinions. A democratic society cannot survive like this. It is a constitutional right, not a favor.

The Damal programme continues to strengthen access to justice in the eastern regions of Somaliland, serving as a shining example of how locally driven justice initiatives can deliver meaningful and lasting benefits to communities.

The Port of Berbera is of critical economic importance to Somaliland and the Horn of Africa.

Yesterday, we met with our partners of the #DAMAL 🌳 Program. With support from #NLinSomalia, the program is expanding access to justice for vulnerable communities through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) centers. Together we are building inclusive pathways to justice ⚖️

Building stronger alliances for justice and equality across Africa starts with coming together. This spirit guided the Africa Family Law Network (AFLN) Membership Drive launch, hosted by SIHA Network in partnership with @EqualityNow, @FemnetProg, and @Musawah. Advocates, legal practitioners, women’s rights organisations, and scholars from across the continent gathered to celebrate the growth of the AFLN and its evolution from a four-partner initiative into a continental movement for progressive family law reform. An unforgettable evening at #HargeisaDebates with Safiya Saeed, Lord Mayor of Sheffield. A cosy and inspiring gathering where women candidates, ministers & young leaders shared honest stories, challenges & hopes for stronger representation.

It was an honour to visit Somaliland again and reconnect with family members, engage with different sectors of society, and meet with government officials and intellectuals. I witnessed Somaliland’s efforts to attract investments, reflected by the development of Berbera port, and its commendable record of peaceful power transfer and political stability. I look forward to continued engagements and another visit soon, Insha Allah.

On 15 August 2025, we had the honor of receiving @hamse_warfa, former Senior Advisor to the United States Department of State, at my office. In his personal capacity, we engaged in candid and substantive discussions with multisectoral professionals on United States policies and strategies concerning the Horn of Africa and the wider East African region. The deliberations underscored the vital contributions of the Somaliland diaspora, the necessity of sustained engagement with both parties across the political spectrum, and the value of advancing incremental achievements and enhanced cooperation in the sphere of foreign policy. Furthermore, we reaffirmed the paramount importance of peace, stability, and regional economic integration as indispensable pillars for sustainable development. We also underscored the strategic relevance of the Red Sea maritime domain to the global security architecture, particularly with regard to the “What” and the “How”, and its integral role in advancing regional economic integration.

Republic of Somaliland's recognition efforts gain momentum as longtime U.S. supporters will take key governmental roles. Ambassador Bashir Goth, leading those advancing the agenda in Washington, continues to champion Somaliland’s cause. Their efforts deserve the support and continuity required to achieve this historic goal.

This letter was sent to my father by former Somali Prime Minister Omer Arte Qalib on April 17, 1994, exactly six days after I was born. My father was a humanitarian worker, a strong believer in humanity, and had a deep love for the Hawd and Reserve area.

The people decided to restore #Somaliland's independence. No leader has a mandate or legitimacy to undermine the people's aspirations expressed in a democratic process. A leader who surrounds himself with unionists should be seen as a threat to Somaliland's very existence.
