#KeepEyesOnSudan Nahid Alfaki, a young woman in her mid-20s, was a front-line worker who helped hundreds of victims before quietly and abruptly quitting. There were no awards or recognition—only another Sudanese woman at the front lines, confronting an impossible situation. Nahid spent the last years of her life helping young women and children, and she did so until the day she died. Rest in peace, young soul. My thoughts are with her family and friends. الف رحمة ونور عليها و ربنا يتقبلها شهيدة.

Two years since war erupted in Sudan in April 2023, the country continues to face an unrelenting human rights and humanitarian catastrophe. What began as a political conflict has evolved into one of the world’s gravest crises, marked by mass killings, ethnic cleansing, sexual violence, and targeted attacks on civilians. The scale of the violence is staggering: - Extrajudicial killings - Enforced disappearances - Rape as a weapon of war - Mass displacement and destruction of property. Yet, amid the horror, courage persists. Sudanese civil society continues to speak out, documenting atrocities, demanding justice, and calling for protection. Join us this morning for a timely discussion on Sudanese voices and reflecting on the role of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) particularly its Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan, with Hon. Commissioner Hatem Essaiem, Chairperson of the Mission, and Hon. Commissioner Salma Sassi, Special Rapporteur on Refugees, Asylum Seekers, IDPs, and Migrants in Africa. We’ll also hear from Ikhlas Ahmed of the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) and Amir Suliman of the African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS) Date: 04 May 2025 Time: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM (GMT – Gambian Time) Venue: Thematic Room 3, Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center #DDATACHPR83 #20YearsDefending

Per the recommendations of the Equality Now Report on Gender Inequality in Family Laws in Africa, cultural, customary and religious laws should align with human right instruments, as the right to non-discrimination supersedes the rights to culture and religion. Instruments such as the Maputo Protocol and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the child provides an obligation to ensure a positive cultural context for women and girls- Deborah Nyokabi, @equalitynow Program Officer (Legal Equality) recommendations on accelerating family law reform as a pathway for access to education.
