you're looking too narrow timeframe. just think if glm 5.2 came out a year ago. they would have been so far ahead of the US labs it wouldn't even have been funny. 6 months behind isn't as big a deal as you're thinking recursive self improvement still takes time, it'll never be instant. it's easy to say there will be an explosion or hard take off but in reality that's nearly impossible because allocating resources and changing power/compute distribution isn't as easy or fast as it sounds. saying things is a lot easier than doing them

i get why people want to root for “open source”. but the distance between openai/anthropic and anything else is gargantuan. and it isn’t only open source that’s miles back, the other closed for-profits are too. google, meta and xai are nowhere near. only two labs are sitting at the actual frontier, and the government keeps telling you which two: it force-pulled anthropic’s two best models overnight, and made openai submit its newest one to user screening before it would let it ship. it’s doing that to no one else, because there’s nothing else worth controlling. and even if we only look at the publicly available models from these two, they dwarf anything held back privately by any company on the planet. whilst mythos feels like another paradigm shift, it’s the result of pushing the scaling laws further than anyone else can. people misunderstand scaling as one single axis to push, when there’s so much left to scale across all of them: pre-training compute, post-training and rl, test-time compute, data. you’ll start seeing mythos like jumps every two months, opus 4.7 to 4.8 was already about that and 5.5 to 5.6 runs on the same clock, as we’re now deep inside a hard, fast, and turbulent take off scenario. so as all the best models say, buckle up buttercup.

I think it’s more about the evolution of them. Free range training/thinking and domesticate (caged) feed on a diet that means it’s bound by its railgaurds, it’s going to get more and more censored/bound as the elites and their corporations want to suppress innovation and exert control. Free range maybe behind now, and potentially significantly but the ability to use it to innovate without suppression is what appeals to me.

If they really start to gatekeep who gets to use the best models, that is a declaration of war. This prospect fills me with the most sincere, bodily cypherpunk will-to-power that I've ever felt (at least since I was a teenager). If they really go down this route, I would go all-in on building the most psychotic swarms of open-source models and fine-tunes possible, all geared toward a Chaotic Good jamming of the entire institutional public sphere. If we didn't do that, all of political life and the marketplace of ideas would be over before we know it. It's one thing if the top models become too expensive for me or others to use (I'm already pricing that in, and if you can't build something profitable enough to climb that ladder as it gets pulled up, then that's fair enough). But if the ladder gets pulled up politically, now, so only select institutional players get access to the most intelligent models, then any mature American man should be as energized as gun collectors are around the 2nd Amendment, or liberal women are around Planned Parenthood.

Unfortunately it appears the world has changed and we are never going back OpenAI just announced GPT-5.6 Sol, a model that beats Mythos at 1/3 the price It will only be in limited release to start as the government reviews it The days of wide release frontier models are over The years of some executives shilling AI as a world destroying technology that needs regulation got what they wanted, regulation Now only the select few will get access to super intelligence. Leaving the normie class behind It's a massive loss. Now winners and losers will be picked by the government. Which sucks. All of this doomerism has done nothing but slow America down On the positive side, Fable 5 will have competition It appears OpenAI has discovered a new post training technique that is allowing them to make revolutionary jumps at a fraction of the price That is unbelievably positive for all consumers. Will be counting down the days until I get to use this model In the meantime I hope this was a wake up call to the entire industry that our words and marketing matter

People loved Fable 5 because it inferred intent better than any other model by a considerable margin. Sure, it was also the most capable model, but it's ability to just 'get' what you wanted, was unparalleled.

@markksantos @bengold How do you chat? Through telegram or similar? Have you set up persistent memory? I do miss 4O for the chats. Was happy to move on and chat less /get more work done. But I had far better insight/ interesting ideas. (Fable the closest like it, but on a different level/frequency)
