I have, in talks with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in the strongest possible terms condemned the execution of a Swedish citizen today. Responsibility for this abhorrent execution rests solely with Iran.

COP30 is under way. The Swedish pavilion at the climate summit in Belém was inaugurated in front of a capacity crowd by Diana Janse, State Secretary to Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa. Sweden ranks second in the new International Media Freedom Support Index (IMFS). Our commitment to freedom of expression, development assistance for free and independent media, and diplomatic efforts to support journalists’ free and independent reporting makes a difference. Sweden is the world’s third-largest donor in support of free and independent media. Sweden’s total support to democracy, human rights and freedoms and the rule of law channelled through Sida accounts for about a quarter of Sida’s overall development assistance. This makes it the largest thematic support area in Sweden’s development assistance. An important meeting with the @SwedishPM Ulf Kristersson. We greatly value our relations with Sweden and all forms of support for our people. And today, one of the key topics of our negotiations was strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities. We consider the JAS 39 Gripen aircraft to be one of the most effective elements of this effort and count on the first deliveries of Gripens already in 2026. We also discussed the situation with air defense and the implementation of the PURL initiative. Special attention was given to Ukraine’s energy sector, with urgent needs arising from Russia’s ongoing attacks on our energy infrastructure. We coordinated positions with the Prime Minister ahead of this week’s meetings in Europe – the European Council session in Brussels and the Coalition of the Willing in London. It is crucial to remain united in our decisions to achieve the results we aim for.

I am proud to have welcomed President Zelenskyy to Sweden and Linköping. Today we have signed an important Letter of Intent, marking a step towards a massive possible export deal regarding Gripen - likely between 100 and 150 fighter jets, to build a new and very strong Ukrainian Air Force. President Zelensky also got a chance to see first hand the impressive capabilities of the Gripen fighter. This will strengthen both Ukraine, Sweden and Europe.

I thank King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden for the meeting. We spoke about Sweden’s participation in Ukraine’s reconstruction. We also discussed support for the school nutrition reform being implemented in Ukraine under the patronage of First Lady Olena Zelenska. We count on Sweden’s contribution to its further implementation. I am grateful to His Majesty and to the entire people of Sweden for the humanitarian support of Ukraine and the readiness to continue it.
