Criticising Israeli govt does not require calling for Israel to be eliminated. Calling out antisemitism does not require condemning Islam. Supporting single sex provision does not require condemning all trans people. Disagreeing with someone does not need you to wish them dead.

@PeterHerman4 I don't suppose it's an option now, because there's a time frame to challenge redundancy and it timed out on me long ago. But it seems that things were not as they were presented to us at the time and therefore the case they made for getting rid of us seems completely undermined.

I was made redundant in 2024 because Music at my previous university was closing. The closure, we were told, made redundancy inevitable and unavoidable. Half of us (more senior) were let go at that point. The others would teach out the course and then also leave. However.... /

@Th_Angelopoulos So bored of these American bros trashing Wilson. No class. They think they're Odysseus but actually they're Antinous.

Two problems. A) The one-word challenge was a demonstration of why translation is hard, not a proposed methodology. You've confused the exercise with the argument, which rather proves the point. and B) Wilson's iambic pentameter wasn't 'wrongheaded': it is the conventional English equivalent of dactylic hexameter, the same logic used by Chapman, Milton, and every major English epic poet before her. She maintained Homer's exact 12,110 lines, chose the standard English narrative meter, and her translation is a good one precisely because that compression produced clarity. You've described her methodology incorrectly, and then called it bad, and you are not offering a single specific alternative. The ancient text is there, if you think Wilson's translation is bad, go on, do one better.
Scott Smith@hf_222222

Midwits who make this defence of Wilson's Odyssey are so tiresome. Set yourself a dumb rule, like "use a single English word, no phrases, & keep the meter" which isn't suitable for English as the target language, & you guarantee a dumb translation.

@adamboxer1 Bigger problem is that it doesn't work. When I was i/c assessment I analysed results per paper over exam period and found that average result dropped by a grade from start to finish. Yes harder papers later but even so they get worse the longer they're 'independent'.

Is study leave fair? When I worked in middle class schools, Year 11 and 13 were gone from more or less the first week after Easter. By this point in the year, I probably would have had over 20 hours of "gain time" already. I could have spent that time developing our curriculum, observing others, reading, arriving a bit later, leaving a bit earlier. Having a more relaxed time in lunch and break. Now, I work in a school where we don't do that. Year 11 are in till the last exam. Year 13 are in till the last exam. The pace doesn't change, in fact it accelerates in this critical pre-exam period. And then, when they're gone, it'll be end of years for everyone else, and I won't have that nice relaxing time to catch up on all the jobs I never had time to do. This, surely, is a systemic inequality. Schools with "study leave" already have a lot of perks, and get to offer their staff something that schools serving a poorer demographic don't. That doesn't seem fair to me.

@HenMazzig Ukraine suddenly did really well after Russia invaded. Then everyone was happy that Ukraine got support (except maybe the Russian govt). Israel does well after Oct 7 and it's all rigged and a scandal, apparently.

The reason Israel keeps doing well at Eurovision is not that the Israeli government is good at marketing. The Israeli government is, on most days, one of the worst-marketed states on earth. The reason Israel keeps doing well at Eurovision is that millions of people across Europe are watching the same news that other Europeans watch, reading the same op-eds, watching the same celebrities pose in keffiyehs, and have decided, quietly, that they disagree. open.substack.com/pub/henmazzig/…

@PeterTatchell No, it's because you called for an intifada. You can support the human rights of Palestinians without calling for violent attacks on Jews. It's not a zero-sum game.

I'm branded an antisemite because I support the human rights of Palestinians After the 7 October attack, I joined March Against Antisemitism with Chief Rabbi (see photo) In 1970s & 80s, I was involved in anti-Nazi groups defending the Jewish community against fascist attacks

Your primary source for the "dog rape" claim was a random person name Shaiel Ben Ephraim, who later admitted he could not prove it. Did you speak with Shaiel and vet his analysis? Did you speak with dog trainers and specialists? Do these medical journals specifically discuss instances where dogs on command anally penetrated humans (no) and check closely on the research to truly check if this was possible anatomically? This extraordinary claim requires extraordinary evidence and it's clear the evidence clearly fell far short here. It would have also been helpful to note than Euro Med and its head Ramy Abdu has close and long standing ties to Hamas, including its former leader Ismail Haniyeh.

I share @megankstack's exasperation, but to those who say that canine rape is impossible, despite the many Palestinians who have described it, I'd note that at least three different medical journal articles discuss rectal injuries in humans from anal penetration by dogs. Sigh.

The Government is not to blame for antisemitism. It is cheap, dangerous and unserious to allow that perception to spread. More importantly, our community doesn't exist in a vacuum. Tice came fresh from media interviews where he couldn't be moved to criticise a joke about melting down Nigerians and using them to fill potholes. And we wonder why self-declared anti-racists don't step up as allies? This strategy is disastrous.

I had a two-hour conversation with a progressive pro-palestine African American. After walking through the history of the conflict, the ideological roots, and the human casualties in relation to Gaza’s size and population, along with Hamas’s tactics, and the peace process, he said this to me: “What you don’t understand is that as an African American who is oppressed daily by state police, I don’t care about history or theology. I care about the Palestinians because I can relate to them living under a police state.”

@EdwardEGibbon Thx for this. Forgive poss silly question. At secondary level, evidence suggests exams more equitable for disadvantaged students than anything else. Is there evidence that this is reversed in HE? Or is it just assumption that exams less fair?

I have seen quite a few 'why don't universities just do exams to solve AI?' questions, so I thought I would try to explain. This is longish, but TL;DR - the previous Tory government made it somewhere between very difficult and illegal. The 2017 HE Act is to blame.

Some interesting before-and-after pruning by the BBC (FYI, the Synagogue, which was there for more than a century, was sold at auction a month or two ago to a local group which plans to turn it into a Mosque. I don't know if building work on that transformation had yet begun.)

@dieworkwear Seems like the Hoult pocket problem best solved by just ... not having the pockets. Not essential, not as if they're going to be used. Could buckling be because extra fabric needed to allow access as leather so unforgiving? But again, not as if going to be used.

Two quick thoughts on why these looks didn't work for me. IMO, Hudson Williams's outfit would have looked better if he had an extended shoulder line. (Note, this is not to body shame; only describing). He has a very straight torso going from shoulders to hips, which makes the silhouette not very interesting. If you extend the shoulder line, you will get a more dramatic V-shaped taper. Doing so would require more padding and construction through the shoulder to support the extension. The trousers are also too long for him, IMO. Nicholas Hoult's Prada outfit also doesn't work for me, partly because the pattern is very strange. The out-breast pocket is almost buried underneath the armhole. Yet, there's also little room for it to move leftward. To get it in a more balanced position, you have to eliminate the line of stitching near the jacket's right-front edge. Or remove the out-breast pocket completely. This jacket derives motorcycle jackets anyway, which don't feature this detail that derives from tailoring, so I'm not sure why it's there. In many photos, Hoult's trousers have hip pockets that are buckling away from him. This usually means the trousers are too tight across from the crotch seam to the outseam. But in a video, they don't look too tight. Not sure what's causing the buckling.
