Today, Hon. @OleNtutuK, Governor, @NarokCountyGvt hosted @NSubotic4 from the Well:Fair Foundation and the #Amref team to discuss the successful WASH project in the county and explore other areas of collaboration. The WASH project has: ☑️ Provided clean water and proper sanitation (toilets) to over 13,000 school children in 38 schools. ☑️ Benefited more than 65,000 community members by improving water access. ☑️ Resulted in decreased diarrheal and hygiene-related diseases. The Governor expressed his gratitude for the partnership and highlighted the improvements in sanitation across the county. He reiterated his administration's commitment to continue collaborating with #Amref and Well:Fair to better the lives of the people. #AmrefWASHImpact @DanielKurao @Demunai @EdwardMukanda @MuteyianViola @shiku_m @DanielKurao @lengewaSMoses @Watukamary @itsjoshuafavour @KinyuaDoug61730

Through the 100% WASH project funded by Well:Fair Foundation, in collaboration with H.E. @OleNtutuK, Governor, @NarokCountyGvt, we co-commissioned the Oloolaimutia Comprehensive School and Community WASH Project at Oloolaimutia Comprehensive School, Narok West Sub-county. The project includes a solar-powered borehole, a community water kiosk, storage tanks, and 36 modern latrines for boys, girls, and teachers, equipped with shower cubicles and handwashing facilities. Additionally, clean and safe drinking water points have been installed at the school compound. The WASH project aims to reduce diarrhea and other WASH-related diseases in schools and communities, and to improve educational outcomes by ensuring high WASH standards. This initiative benefits 1261 learners at Oloolaimutia Comprehensive School, as well as 37 other schools and catchment communities in Narok West and Transmara West. Currently, over 17000 learners and approximately 65,000 community members have gained access to safe water and sanitation. #AmrefWASHImpact @SuboticStiftung @NSubotic4 @martinmuchangi @DanielKurao @DeMunai @lengewaSMoses @MuteyianViola

In the fight to control and eliminate Neglected Tropical Diseases, the Deworming Innovation Fund Program in Western Kenya has partnered with unlikely champions, to ensure all eligible populations are reached with our interventions. Recognising the critical role that religion and spirituality play in people’s medical decisions, we partnered with Yesu wa Tongaren, the self-proclaimed ‘messiah’ and ‘son of God’. This ensured his congregants were included during the community-wide treatment exercises, targeting intestinal worms and bilharzia. This was key because of drug hesitancy and resistance from the sect’s members during previous treatment exercises and in keeping with the spirit of reaching the unreached as part of Universal Health Coverage. @MartinMuchangi @GilbertWangalwa @NdiranguWanjuko @TheENDFund #BeatNTD @PublicHealthMoH

So far, 34 schools in Narok West and Transmara West sub-counties have benefitted from safe water, inclusive sanitation facilities, and WASH behaviour change communication interventions, reaching about 15,000 school-going children. In extension, 34 catchment communities representing about 65,900 members are benefitting from safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene. Our interventions aim to bridge a gap of 77 Public Primary Schools (58%) in Narok West and 133 Public Primary Schools (80%) in Transmara West, which do not have access to improved Water and Sanitation. This represents about 86,000 school-going children in both sub-counties. It's quite notable that since Amref began providing safe and inclusive WASH services, there has been improved retention of learners in schools, increased boarding facilities, and improved academic performance among learners.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Teachers’ Service Commission, Office of the Narok County Commissioner, County Department of Health, County Department of Water, and other stakeholders, we celebrated the 2nd WASH in Schools (WinS) Festival in Narok County on August 2, 2024, at Lekanka Primary School in Narok West. The event, themed "A Clean and Safe Learning Environment: A Right for Every Child", highlighted our collective commitment to providing every child with a healthy educational environment. This annual festival is an innovative platform that engages and involves schools in a WASH Club competition through performance arts. Students participated in songs, dances, skits, poems, and essays to promote and reinforce sustainable practices in water, sanitation, and hygiene. The event enhances health and educational outcomes among learners and fosters community involvement and awareness. @SuboticStiftung @NSubotic4 @NdiranguWanjuki @NarokCountyGvt @DanielKurao @DeMunai @lengewaSMoses @MuteyianViola
