@greg_ashman The existence of one condition does not preclude the importance of another. Hungry children can be fed and taught to read at the same time. And long term, teaching them to read will provide prevention.

This is a key divide in education: Hopelessness versus agency. We should all be more like Engelmann.
Robert Pondiscio@rpondiscio

@vkoganpolisci I heard a story once about a teacher complaining to Zig Engelmann that she shouldn't be expected to teach hungry children to read. "Well, now they have two problems," he reportedly said. "They're hungry *and* they can't read."

@friendschurches When I was a child, the yew tree in the churchyard of our ancient village church blew down. A wood turner from West Wales took away the trunk then returned with apples and pears made from the yew tree and villagers bought them. We still have one. I love the continuity of it.

Yew trees can be found in churchyards for several reasons. Some ancient yews survive from a time before Christian worship, while others were more recently planted to prevent the illegal grazing of livestock in churchyards. 📷 St Helen's, Barmby on the Marsh, East Yorkshire

Yew trees are a common sight in our churchyards! But did you know that the first Christmas tree in Britain was a yew tree? 📷 St Lawrence's, Hutton Bonville, North Yorkshire

@oldandrewuk “You should have a spare set of professional clothing in your room”. I rolled my eyes but-I kid you not-a few months later I had a bizarre clothing malfunction on the way to work and had to wear a borrowed, ill fitting jacket with no shirt all day

What’s a backhanded compliment you’ve received? I’ll go first: “You scrub up well” - Translation: You look surprisingly decent when you make an effort, which is rare.

@tombennett71 Schools, like society, aren't strict enough. Too many students and parents lack basic skills able to navigate simple rules and society; there is little we can do about the parents but there is hope with the kids. We must resist the parental resistance surl.li/qpxte

I've noticed an interesting phenomenon in anti-behaviour discourse: attributing every bad thing you don't like to some imagined version of 'schools having rules'. The latest absurdity is 'national poor attendance rates are caused by schools being a bit strict on, for example, getting quickly to lessons.' It's mental.

@GWRHelp Hi, My train is still listed as normal in the tracker but separately there are delays between Cardiff and Bristol Parkway, then closure between Bristol Parkway and Swindon. What time will the 10:23 arrive at Paddington? I have a flight to catch.

@vickygammon Hi there. The train times that appear on gwr.com/check are trains that we expect to run, we have removed trains from this timetable that we are unable to run. So all services on this page should be up-to-date and accurate - Michaela

Good morning 👋 ℹ️ Due to further disruption on the railway because of yesterday's weather, please check your journey before you travel at gwr.com/check ⚠ Due to flooding on the railway near Chipping Sodbury, the line between Swindon and Bristol Parkway is shut. Trains will take a different route adding up to 40 minutes to your journey time. ⚠ Due to flooding at Brent Mill Viaduct between Plymouth and Totnes we can only use one of the two lines. This is causing some congestion and delay and we have had to reduce the number of trains running between Plymouth and Newton Abbot. ⚠ Due to flooding on the Liskeard to Looe branch, the line will be suspended until further notice.

@GWRHelp Hi, i’m getting the 10:25 from Swansea to Paddington then Heathrow Express tomorrow. It looks like all Swansea-Paddington trains are cancelled today. How can I track the likelihood of them being running tomorrow? Is there a replacement service?

Is there a way of removing Liz Truss from the list of PMs like we did with Lady Jane Grey from monarchs? It's just so weird we'll see her lining up on the front row of public events for decades as if she were a real PM and not a symptom of our 2020s collective insanity.

@provokedpedago1 @spinningoutaday Also I think schools would decide to assume that x amount of work should be completed in the agreed hours and teachers who cannot do this are just inefficient?

@ShakinthatChalk I think there’s a range of opinion on the long summer in the general public, to be honest.

Teachers who enjoy 13 weeks of holiday complaining that the first half term week off (after a 6 week holiday barely 6 weeks before) needs to be two weeks. And that children’s summer should be shortened to accommodate this. Have you any idea how that looks to the general public?

@DoctorChrisVT Just finished the book; was gripped throughout. One theme I am interested in is the connection between the rise of UPF and obesity with the change in working patterns. Who bears the load in preparing better food?

@MrBoothY6 We are learning about puberty in Y6 so I just gave them the because/but/so routine with ‘Puberty can be challenging…’ . It yielded lots of good thinking.

Been using this consistent format for quiet work in English when the children come in from playtime for the last couple of weeks and already seeing really pleasing progress in some of them in terms of thinking about sentence structure and playing around with language.
