Reimagining Urban Maharashtra: Shaping the Future at the Pune Urban Dialogue Glad to attend and address at 'Pune Urban Dialogue: Challenges and Solutions' in Pune, today. Offered my heartfelt tribute to the visionary administrator Late S. G. Barve on his 111th birth anniversary and also reflected on his immense contribution, whose visionary leadership shaped the development of cities like Navi Mumbai and Faridabad. Congratulated the organisers for honouring Late S. G. Barve's legacy by hosting the Pune Urban Dialogue. Emphasised that today, about 50% of Maharashtra’s population lives across nearly 500 cities, while the remaining 50% lives in around 40,000 villages. If we can transform these 500 cities, we can significantly uplift the quality of life for millions. Initiatives like the Pune Urban Dialogue help us brainstorm ideas and find practical solutions for our cities' future. Also, shared my thoughts on the global trend of urbanisation — how every developed nation has grown through it, and how resisting urbanisation is impossible. However, pointed out that rapid urban growth linked to economic progress has often not been properly managed. In Maharashtra, urbanisation accelerated post-1980, but serious efforts towards urban management only began after 1990. Over the past decade, we have seen a qualitative leap in infrastructure investments, and I’m proud that development plans for major areas have not only been prepared but also successfully implemented. Discussed key initiatives we have introduced, such as the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority Act, the Single Ticket Scheme for seamless urban transport, and our collaboration with Google for smarter urban planning. While celebrating our progress, we also cautioned about challenges like flash floods, river and drain encroachments, and the growing risks associated with heavier rainfall. We must rethink our urban planning with these realities in mind, and this Urban Dialogue is a vital step in that direction.
