• If you keep talking about 50%, why isn’t it in the law? Words mean nothing without backing
• Govt now gets to pick & choose the census, on what basis?
• The 2001 constitutional freeze is removed and replaced with nothing
• Who controls the Delimitation Commission? Who appoints them? Why is it beyond judicial review?
• Is this effectively punishing Southern states for controlling population?
• And what’s the point of debate after the Bill is already notified? Super glad that someone finally represented the South with clarity & spine! 👏

On the Women’s Reservation Bill: read the fine print. The BJP called for a Special Session in the middle of state elections, over two and a half years after the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in 2023, only to confirm that it cannot be implemented without a Census and delimitation. Let us be very clear: We want the Women’s Reservation Bill to be implemented NOW. Tamil Nadu was among the earliest to implement reservation for women in local bodies. Our concern is with delimitation, which requires careful thought to ensure it is fair, especially for southern states. We asked for consultation, clarity, and consensus. At the very least, the Bill could have been delinked and implemented. The NDA could have delinked it. They chose not to. They could have used this time to consult states on delimitation. They chose not to. They could have addressed these concerns in the Bill. They chose not to. This is not justice. This is not intent. This is optics. Women in Tamil Nadu see through this. Women across India are not a vote bank. They are watching. The truth is simple: the BJP could have delivered. The pattern of Tamil Nadu police: While the farmer who was shot by Alangulam Sub-Inspector Esakkiraja is yet to get back on his feet, his family says they are facing online abuses from policeman's supporters justifying the firing. They alleged the SI & Inspector threatened the 'panicked' elderly father of the farmer to talk in favour police action in Scene of Crime itself, videographed it & intentionally leaked it to abusers. "The police attempt to establish farmer Manikandan is a ganja addict," they said. Esakkiraja and his supporters are maintaining social media pages across diff platforms to praise his policing. He is seen posting with the guns cinematically in uniform and civid dress. However, few accounts were locked after the incident.

My latest column in @the_hindu deplores the sluggishness of our judiciary and laments that the process is often the punishment. I call for urgent reform, in the interests of the human rights of ordinary citizens seeking justice. The people need a system that works, and is fast and fair.

Today is a historic day- the united Opposition resoundingly defeated the illegal & ill-thought out Constitutional Amendment Bill brought in the guise of a Women’s Reservation Bill.

There was an India before this Bill. The India that comes after this Bill strikes at the very fabric of our Constitution and the intent of its makers. Today, the government is asking us to hand over a blank cheque. This Bill contains no clear mention of limits such as a 50% increase, no clarity on the basis of delimitation, and no transparent safeguards to prevent arbitrary action. It leaves open the possibility of an unfair, unjust delimitation process and places enormous power in the hands of a committee that will be appointed by the executive itself. How can this be called fair in a functioning democracy? How are we expected to trust a government that, over the past 12 years, has repeatedly pushed through draconian laws without meaningful consultation or consensus in Parliament? Laws that reshape institutions, alter balances of power, and weaken the spirit of federalism! As Chief Minister Thiru @mkstalin has rightly said, this is a fight we are prepared to take to the streets and to the people of Tamil Nadu. Because when faith in the parliamentary process is eroded, the responsibility to defend constitutional values must return to the people themselves. #Delimitation #TNWillFightTNWillWin

The govt is using women’s reservation as a front for pushing its politically motivated agenda of delimitation. There are serious concerns about the disproportionate impact of delimitation on southern states. If the govt was serious about women’s reservation, the only change needed was to delink women’s reservation from census & delimitation and operationalise reservation at the current strength of Lok Sabha & Assemblies.
