There is a deep sickness in Nigerian Christianity. An epidemic of performative, Pharisaical, ignorant, self-absorbed, and indifferent believers. We live in a nation where Christians have faced decades of targeted attacks, killings, and displacement by jihadists and Fulani militants Especially in the Middle Belt. Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List ranks Nigeria 7 globally for Christian persecution, with thousands murdered for their faith in recent years alone. Yet in many of our comfortable churches, you will rarely hear a word about it. Let me break it down 1. The Performative Christian These are Christians that are all show, no substance. They fast loudly, pray loudly, post scriptures loudly on social media. Their Christianity is for public consumption, a costume, not a conviction. But when their brothers and sisters are slaughtered in Plateau, Benue, and Southern Kaduna? Complete silence. Deliberate silence. 2. The Pharisaical Christian Full of religious knowledge, empty of righteous action. They can quote chapter and verse, yet they walk past the wounded like the Pharisees on the road to Jericho, ignoring the dying Christian farmer in the Middle Belt. Religion without conscience is just performance with theology attached to it. 3. The Ignorant Christian This one is dangerous because the ignorance is often chosen. They don’t read. They don’t ask. They sit insulated in noisy prosperity churches in Lagos, PH, Enugu, and Abuja, while genocide in slow motion unfolds a few hundred kilometres away. Chosen ignorance is moral failure dressed as innocence. 4. The Self-Absorbed Christian Their faith begins and ends with “me”: my breakthrough, my blessing, my healing, my visa, my promotion. The church has become a personal miracle transaction point. Other people’s suffering especially the persecution of fellow Christians simply doesn’t register. Too busy negotiating their own blessing to notice the tragedy. 5. The Indifferent Christian The most chilling. They know. They’ve seen the headlines and reports. And they simply do not care. In the face of ongoing targeted violence against Christians, indifference is not neutrality, it is complicity. The Church in Nigeria, we must repent. Break the silence. Amplify the voices from the Middle Belt. Pray specifically for the persecuted. Support the displaced. Demand courage from our pulpits. Our brothers’ blood is crying out. What will our answer be?

Christians in Nigeria continue to face brutal violence and death at the hands of radical Islamic terrorists. The government in Abuja must step up and protect their citizens in the Middle Belt. It's past time to decentralize police authority so state governments can protect their citizens and stop this horrific persecution.

@estherannuduma It will surprise you that more than half of those who participated in that barbaric act are Christians, and what happened had nothing to do with tradition
