Today, May 25, 2026, is Memorial Day, when the United States honors and commemorates the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. On behalf of the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile (BRGIE), we join in commemorating all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States. The United States is a country whose values of freedom and liberty continue to serve as an example to the world. Biafran-Americans have proudly served in the U.S. military, and many Biafran-Americans proudly call the United States home. BRGIE deeply appreciates the support it has received from the United States, which has been a leading voice in holding the Nigerian government accountable for its atrocities. As Biafrans prepare to honor our own heroes and heroines on May 30, we also pay tribute to those who served and sacrificed for the United States. Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) agents are trying to persuade their counterparts at the US Treasury to impose sanctions on this organisation's representatives, including Ogechukwu Nkere, its prime minister since January. The NFIU accuses the American-Nigerian of financing the activities of the Biafran separatists. When contacted by Africa Intelligence, Nkere stated that "such actions would constitute a cynical misuse of frameworks to target a legitimate self-determination and independence movement representing millions of Christians from Southeast Nigeria". Based in the United States, where he conducts intense lobbying, the prime minister of the Biafran government in exile has come under the scrutiny of the Nigerian financial intelligence unit. Determined to combat jihadist groups in the Lake Chad area, the Trump administration has increased exchanges with the teams of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in recent weeks. Founded in 2014 by Nnamdi Kanu, this organisation can draw on support from across the Atlantic, notably from the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BGIE). Nkere has managed to attract the attention of Republicans, such as the senator from Texas, Ted Cruz (AI, 15/10/25) by using the argument of an alleged "Christian genocide" taking place in Nigeria (AI, 19/07/24). It was in the name of these mass killings specifically targeting Christians that Donald Trump ordered strikes on Sokoto State (North-West) on the night of 25 December 2025, followed by the deployment of around a hundred soldiers to train the Nigerian army as well as several drones in Bauchi State (North-East) during the first quarter of 2026. In 2024, Abuja had already secured from Finland the arrest of activist Simon Ekpa, Nkere's predecessor as head of the Biafran executive in exile. Established in Europe since 2007, he was sentenced in September 2025 by the Finnish courts to six years in prison for terrorism-related offences after having "attempted to promote the independence of the so-called Biafra region in south-eastern Nigeria by illegal means". The Nigerian authorities had repeatedly tried to obtain his extradition before he was finally arrested. The founder of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has been imprisoned in Nigeria since 2021 after being extradited from Kenya. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on 20 November 2025, during a trial held in Abuja. His movement regularly calls for a general strike, or sit-at-home, among the population of the south-east of the country where the Biafran war claimed nearly two million lives between 1967 and 1970. africaintelligence.com/west-africa/20…
