Manipur : PRESS RELEASE Sadar Hills 14th May 2026 The Kuki Students’ Organization, Sadar Hills , strongly condemns the open justification of hostage-taking by the Tahamzam Youth Forum under the pretext of “retaliation.” No organisation has the authority to abduct and detain innocent civilians. Hostage-taking is criminal, unlawful, and barbaric. KSO-Sadar Hills notes that ZUF and sections of the Zeliangrong community have repeatedly declared their neutrality and refusal to be dragged into the violence engineered by Tangkhul-led NSCN-IM terrorists. This clearly reflects their desire for peaceful coexistence rather than submission to militant intimidation and expansionist politics. For decades, the Zeliangrong community has been politically manipulated and militarily exploited under the hollow agenda of “Nagalim for Christ.” The Tangkhul-led NSCN-IM has used smaller communities as pawns to sustain its violent and divisive ambitions across Manipur. Every peace-loving community must remain vigilant against the dangerous expansionist designs of NSCN-IM. It must be stated openly that NSCN-IM has been one of the principal instigators behind the prolonged violence and mistrust between Kukis and Meiteis. This is no longer the 1990s. PRESS NOTE 14th May 2026 The tragic loss of innocent lives and the destruction of villages in Ukhrul, Kamjong, and Kangpokpi districts continue to expose the deep humanitarian crisis faced by the hill people. The recent ambush between Kotzim and Kolten villages in Kangpokpi district, where Church leaders lost their lives while returning from the United Baptist Convention at Chiengkonpang, Lamka, has once again shaken the entire region. Amidst these painful incidents, humanitarian efforts and community interventions have also emerged. Earlier in March 2026, villagers from Thawai Kuki village went missing, including two men working on the village water supply project. During the same period, Tangkhul civilians travelling through Sangkai village were detained for security reasons amidst rising tensions. Following interventions by Government Agencies and consultations with Kuki Civil Society Organisations, the Tangkhul civilians were safely released. However, the bodies of the two missing men from Thawai Kuki village were later recovered with bullet injuries, further intensifying grief and concern among the people. At present, reports indicate that civilians from both communities remain under custody in different areas, while negotiations between community leaders are ongoing to ensure their safe return and prevent further escalation. It is hoped that with timely intervention from Government Agencies and continued humanitarian engagement from civil society groups, the present crisis in Kangpokpi district and adjoining hill areas can be resolved peacefully and responsibly. Late Rev. Dr. Vumthang Sitlhou was not only a prominent Kui-Zo Christian leader in Manipur but also a true messenger of peace for the state. He was among the tribal church leaders working tirelessly to resolve tensions between the Kuki & Thangkhul Naga living in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. At his team’s initiative, a second round of peace meetings between the apex Naga CSOs and Kuki CSOs was scheduled to be held in Kohima under the observation of the Nagaland Christian Forum. Only yesterday, Kuki and Naga leaders from Manipur finalized the meeting venue and date. What shocked the Kuki-Zo community is how this agent of peace and his team were ambushed on their return from Lamka to Kangpokpi. Why, among the many Kuki-Zo vehicles and travelers on that route, were Rev. Dr. Vumthang Sitlhou and his team specifically targeted? This was not a random attack. It was a deliberate, meticulously planned ambush carried out by individuals or groups opposed to peace between the Kuki-Zo and Naga communities of Manipur. The Government must act swiftly to apprehend the perpetrators of this horrific murder. Any community shielding them should understand that this barbaric killing of a peace envoy and his fellow pastors will bring curse upon their tribe and community.
