⚖️ The legal concern remains unchanged: Under the Intl. Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the death penalty must be limited to the “most serious crimes.” Drug-related offences-especially nonviolent cases,do not meet this threshold. @UN_SPExperts @ hrw.org/news/2026/04/2…

Sexual violence in conflict is prosecutable under international law. It may constitute: • war crimes • crimes against humanity • genocide (depending on evidence of intent) The legal frameworks exist. The question is whether they will be applied. @IntlCrimCourt @UN_HRC @UN

Understanding Eritrea Martin Plaut Understanding Eritrea is a nonfiction book that explores the political system, history, and social reality of Eritrea. Martin Plaut examines how the country developed after independence in 1993 and how its leadership, under President Isaias Afwerki, created a highly centralized and tightly controlled state. The book explains that the government justifies strict control by pointing to past wars, national security, and the need for unity, but this has led to severe limits on political freedom, media, and civil society. A central theme of the book is the system of indefinite national service. Originally presented as a short period of service for national defense and development, it became open-ended for many citizens, shaping the economy and daily life. Young people often spend years in military or state-assigned roles with low pay and limited choice. Plaut describes how this has contributed to widespread frustration and has pushed many Eritreans to leave the country, creating a large diaspora. The book also reflects on isolation. Eritrea has had tense relations with neighbors and a difficult relationship with international institutions. Limited press freedom and restricted access for journalists and researchers mean that much of the country’s reality is hidden from the outside world. Plaut uses testimonies, reports, and historical context to piece together a picture of governance, security structures, and the lived experience of ordinary people. Another important reflection is resilience. Despite hardship, Eritrean society shows strong community bonds, cultural pride, and endurance. The book does not only focus on repression; it also highlights the legacy of the independence struggle, the value placed on sovereignty, and the complexity of national identity. Overall, Understanding Eritrea reflects the tension between security and freedom, state power and individual rights, isolation and global connection. It invites readers to think critically about how history, leadership, and geopolitics can shape a nation’s path and the everyday lives of its citizens. @martinplaut #TransnationalRepression #BlueRevolution #NoMorePFDJTerror #RegimeChangeInEritrea

Dialogue without return. Reconciliation without restitution. Peace without justice. That is not “confidence-building.” It is institutionalized impunity. The AU’s credibility depends on this line: Impunity is not neutrality. #WesternTigray @achpr_cadhp @AUC_PAPS @Atsu2427

The Abiye government is seizing funds collected by young people to provide aid to starving populations in 146 IDP centers. This constitutes outright theft, accompanied by intimidation of young people for seeking humanitarian donations. It is deeply shameful that the world remains silent while life-saving efforts are suppressed, funds are stolen, and resources are redirected to purchase drones used in indiscriminate attacks on cities, hospitals, schools, and IDP camps. Where can such acts of genocide be formally reported? #UpholdPretoriaAgreement #BringBackHomeTheTigreanIDPs #Justice4TigrayGenocide @UNHumanRights @UN @Refugees @_AfricanUnion @SecMarcoRu7700 @USEmbassyAddis @ColemanUSAID @EU_Commission @EUCouncil @EUCouncilPress @DavidAltonHL @martinplaut @RAbdiAnalyst @ChefMuller222 @Danaity70
