Protests demanding the safe release of six remaining Naga civilians allegedly being held hostage intensified on May 16 at Kanglatongbi in Kangpokpi district. The agitation, led by the Koubru Range Liangmai Women’s Union, entered its fourth day as several civil society and indigenous groups joined the demonstration. Protesters raised slogans against violence and abduction, carrying placards reading “Hostages are Human, Not Weapons” and “Where is Our Government?” According to organisers, 20 Naga civilians were allegedly abducted from Leilon Vaiphei village following the May 13 ambush incident in Kangpokpi district in which three church leaders were killed. While several individuals have reportedly been released, six are still said to remain in captivity. Civil society leaders urged both the state and Central governments to intervene immediately and ensure the safe return of the remaining civilians. MEDIA RELEASE 16-May-2026 The Thadou Human Rights Advocacy (THRA) strongly condemns the malicious and divisive press release issued by the so-called Thadou Inpi General Headquarters (TI-GHQ) dated 16th May, 2026, signed by Chongpu Kipgen and Thangminlen Kipgen. This is yet another attempt by a handful of individuals to suppress the legitimate voice of the Thadou people and maintain their stranglehold over the community. Chongpu Kipgen and Thangminlen Kipgen are well-known stooges of the Kipgen clan and function as proxies of the Kuki National Front (KNF). Their so-called TI-GHQ has no genuine mandate from the broader Thadou community. They operate primarily through gun power and intimidation, restricting their influence to a narrow stretch of the Dimapur-Imphal Road — from Kangpokpi to Motbung in Kangpokpi district. They have never exercised any organic influence beyond this armed-controlled zone. Instead of protecting Thadou interests, these individuals and their armed sponsors have systematically targeted, harassed, and held the Thadou community hostage. They function as enforcers to keep the Thadou people under subjugation in the name of “Kuki” supremacy. Their only objective is to serve the political and financial interests of certain Kipgen leaders and KNF-backed MLAs occupying reserved seats in Kangpokpi (Gen) and Saitu (ST) constituencies. The Government of India and the Government of Manipur have already accommodated the “Kuki quota” by appointing Kangpokpi MLA Nemcha Kipgen (wife of KNF President ST Thangboi) as Deputy Chief Minister. This appointment was made under the “Kuki” category, not Thadou. Therefore, these Kuki-aligned Kipgen proxies have no moral or political right to interfere in purely Thadou affairs. They should confine themselves to Kuki politics and stop pretending to speak for the Thadou tribe. We urgently call upon the Government of India to immediately intervene and restore basic human rights of the Thadou people. Law and order must be enforced in the Kangpokpi-Motbung corridor and surrounding Thadou areas currently under the shadow of armed groups and their proxies. The Government of Manipur must stop surrendering to armed Kuki militants and their political proxies. The continued suppression of Thadou voices and rights by these elements is creating deep resentment not only to Thadou people but also to other communities like Naga, Meitei, Zomi, etc. and may lead to serious repercussions if not addressed immediately. The Thadou Human Rights Advocacy makes it crystal clear that the so-called TI-GHQ, Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM), and their allied bodies under Kipgen-KNF control do not represent the Thadou community. They represent only a narrow clique pursuing personal and clan interests at the cost of Thadou dignity and freedom. We demand immediate restoration of law and order in Thadou-inhabited areas, protection of Thadou people from intimidation and hostage-like conditions and an end to the interference of Kuki supremacist elements in Thadou internal matters. They are deliberately downplaying the numbers by presenting the total hostages as only 14 (12 women from Leilon + 2 others), completely omitting the 6 Naga males from Leilon.. This is where it gets difficult to digest the narration! Karong to Senapati is walkable. Even the town committee of the area is named as Karong Senapati TC! Also, on which side of the road did he hide and which toilet? On one side of the road is the hill section while the other side is river. If he indeed ran from his kidnapper, he could have been easily caught again by the those anti-socials because there's not much places to hide in that area, except if he decided to hide under Senapati bridge.
