Bengaluru: A major tragedy was averted after a train hit a BMTC bus near Sadaramangala. The rear of the bus damaged but there were no passengers onboard. The conductor suffered minor injuries. Karnataka borrows most of its annual debt in the last quarter of the year due to its excellent cash flows in the first 3 quarters. Hence the graph shows Karnataka as the highest borrower in Q4. Other states borrow throughout the year & hence their borrowing is distributed in all quarters. The open market borrowing of Karnataka in 2025-26 is estimated at Rs 1,05,000 crores and 88% of this amount is borrowed in Q4. Which means the state has borrowed only 12,000 crores in Q1-Q3. TN’s borrowing is much higher than Karnataka’s yet its Q4 borrowing is lower because the state has borrowed large amounts in the previous Quarters as well, unlike Karnataka. It is therefore misleading to judge a state’s total debt based on one quarter’s information. Take a look at the year’s borrowing & you will see that Karnataka’s borrowing is within 3% of its GSDP.
