The Pakistani American Public Affairs Committee (PAKPAC) strongly condemns the recent escalation of violence and the tragic killings that have occurred during protests in Kashmir and Mirpur. PAKPAC stands in firm solidarity with citizens exercising their fundamental right to peaceful assembly and demands immediate action to ensure their safety. PAKPAC is troubled by the reports coming out of Rawalakot regarding unjust violence against peaceful protests. In recent weeks, escalating tensions surrounding the region's legislative assembly elections have resulted in severe unrest and an unacceptable loss of life. The Pakistan government must be held accountable for the safety of its citizens. Reports of violence and unrest threaten the integrity of the electoral process. PAKPAC calls on @GovtofPakistan to uphold principles of human rights, democracy, and freedom of speech and assembly. The use of force against unarmed, peaceful protestors represents a grave violation of human rights and democratic principles. PAKPAC calls upon the U.S. Administration, Congress, and the broader international community to closely monitor the ongoing situation. We urge global leaders to firmly advocate for human rights, electoral transparency, and strict government accountability in the region. PAKPAC remains committed to supporting democratic institutions, civil liberties, and the rule of law.
