@RachelXReads Suburbs, in one of the richest counties in the country. But over the last 5-6 years, the whole county system has deemphasized "best and most timeless books" to a depressing extent.

@jeffreyb I know that this is a tough situation for inner-city libraries, and they're trying to adapt. But most libraries out there are serving small communities, and they need lots of support and patronage.

Wait, what? WE NEED LIBRARIES. The library is where you go to find the best and most timeless books ever written, all carefully curated for you. Beyond that, libraries serve as study spaces, hold cultural events, provide local authors with visibility, run book/chess/trivia clubs, and offer endless free resources to the community.

@DemzDeliver I say it … libraries are terrible wastes of money in 2026.

@eigenrobot Is there a good tick genocide charity? This seems like a better option than throwing money at my local hospital

@SeanTrende Teens have mostly replaced smoking tobacco with the devil's lettuce, SSRIs, and ritalin. I used to be a big anti-tobacco guy, but I am now agnostic.

@OneFineJay @centristpeater Nah, she's good looking. But Most Beautiful in the World is quite a stretch, even when she was young. The absurd thing is that she's supposed to be playing a dual role as both Helen (MBitW) and Clytemnestra (not MBitW).

@Ed_Realist @ZaidJilani Anyway, prior to their reforms, poverty-ridden MS was an absolute basketcase when 8th was directly compared, but now they're around the median for whites, and sig better than median for blacks. They are either engaging in massive data shenanigans or have hugely improved things.

@Ed_Realist @ZaidJilani Mississippi in 2009 was 45th for 8th grade white reading, 36th for blacks (but 10 states didn't have black scores). In 8th math, 38th for blacks (8 states NS), 49th for whites.

@Ed_Realist @ZaidJilani When adjusted for demographics, 8th grade scores in Mississippi are now close to the top. 8th grade MS raw scores tie CA. Slightly higher percentages above "basic", slightly fewer "proficient". I don't think we have good data for 12th, in any state.

@ZaidJilani Its 4th grade students score higher. By 8th grade, not so much. By 12th grade, it's a goner.

@lymanstoneky Other sites have probably done research as well, though their research may be in the negative: "when we match these types of people together, they stop using our site, so we need to not match them together."

It’s actually crazy we don’t have RCTs of programs designed to help young men/women find love. Finding recruits would be easy. Follow up time wouldn’t be that long. Numerous cheap candidate interventions are available but untested.

@blightersort I have been suspicious of crime numbers ever since Chicago was caught disappearing actual murders, and the follow up a year later was that they were disappearing even more of them.

oh wow, sounds bad. the good news is that this is definitely an isolated problem confined to only DC and there is definitely no pressure to game crime statistics in other US cities so the broader decline in crime is definitely real, 100% for sure

Update: WaPo got its hands on the department's internal report, which apparently "paints a picture of D.C. police officials manipulating classifications — including of violent assaults, robberies and thefts — as they buckled under pressure from the department’s top brass to reduce crime." washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2026/…
