Earth’s oceans have quietly crossed a chemical tipping point. A new global study reveals that 40% of surface waters and 60% of the deep sea have become too acidic for many shell-forming species to survive. This shift—driven by rising carbon dioxide absorbed from the atmosphere—is dissolving the calcium foundations of life itself. Corals, mollusks, and plankton are struggling to build shells. Fisheries face instability. Entire ecosystems that once buffered our climate are now destabilizing beneath the waves. The damage is especially severe in polar regions and deep nutrient-rich zones where life has always flourished. Scientists warn we may be underestimating the scale of change. Ocean acidification is no longer a distant concern—it’s a planetary boundary crossed. The chemistry that sustained marine life for millions of years is changing in mere decades, and its ripple effects reach every coastline on Earth. Via discvr blog

Ocean acidification has been identified in the Planetary Boundary Framework as a planetary process approaching a boundary that could lead to unacceptable environmental change. Using revised estimates of pre-industrial aragonite saturation state, state-of-the-art data-model products, including uncertainties and assessing impact on ecological indicators, we improve upon the ocean acidification planetary boundary assessment and demonstrate that by 2020, the average global ocean conditions had already crossed into the uncertainty range of the ocean acidification boundary. This analysis was further extended to the subsurface ocean, revealing that up to 60% of the global subsurface ocean (down to 200 m) had crossed that boundary, compared to over 40% of the global surface ocean. These changes result in significant declines in suitable habitats for important calcifying species, including 43% reduction in habitat for tropical and subtropical coral reefs, up to 61% for polar pteropods, and 13% for coastal bivalves. By including these additional considerations, we suggest a revised boundary of 10% reduction from pre-industrial conditions more adequately prevents risk to marine ecosystems and their services; a benchmark which was surpassed by year 2000 across the entire surface ocean. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/gc…

So now insurance companies plan to sue local government in the aftermath of disasters? In NZ @AIGinsurance wants to extract more financial gain from citizens & governments devastated by floods. Aren't rising premiums & cancelled policies enough? This precedent is very bad.

Many years ago, before I became a trauma specialist, I lost my home and everything in my life to a catastrophic house fire. All I owned, including my beloved cat, I lost in the blaze. Watching the fires in Los Angeles, I wanted to share what helped me recover -- and what didn't. If you're facing loss or supporting people who are, I hope it helps. *What to do:* 1. Give yourself time to heal. Aftermath is measured in days, then weeks, then months, then years. Each phase is different and needs different things. 2. Life is not normal. You don't need to pretend it is. Allow yourself to express your grief, in its full spectrum. There's no script to follow. Your grief isn't going to look like anyone else's. 3. Create as much social support for yourself as possible. Your support system will need to be there for the long-haul. They can't understand what you've been through, but don't push them away when they try. They will show up imperfectly. Let them. 4. Go slow with what you're feeling. Don't try to reason with it or get it over with. When feelings get overwhelming, slow them down. Breathe slower, move slower, talk slower. Slowness will help you to finally feel safe. 5. Let your body rest. Walking, singing and humming, sleeping as best you can, and sitting quietly are just what your nervous system needs to reorient and heal. *What not to do:* 1. Don't tell people you're okay when you're not. It's not your job to make anyone else (except your children) feel more comfortable. 2. Don't rush your healing. Being pushy with your process forces the trauma underground, where it gets stronger. Instead of healing faster, you'll just have more work to do later. 3. Don't numb yourself. Feel your grief in digestible chunks, but don't blunt the pain. Escaping into numbing behaviors or substances will not bring relief. Only feeling your grief, with dignity and self-compassion, will take you where you need to be. 4. Don't try to rebuild before you're ready. Give things time to settle. Let the shock and terror slowly drain from your body in their own time. At the right moment, you'll know what to do next. In the aftermath, it won't be clear. 5. Don't force positivity. This didn't "happen for a reason" and there's no "silver lining," nothing you need to feel "grateful" for. Protect yourself from people who try to force positivity on you. You get to make your own meaning of this later, when you're ready. I'm sending gentle blessings for the journey ahead, for all those impacted by these fires. May the road ahead be easy and may those you love smooth your way.

Introducing Aiccelerate DAO: Accelerating Crypto x Agentic AI. aiccelerate.org Read on to find out how to become a partner. We are an Investment & Development DAO with members from the top open source AI teams, Coinbase, Google, and major funds. We believe crypto AI is at an inflection point. Our mission is to accelerate the development of decentralized, open source AI and support high potential projects across every ecosystem. We consider agentic AI to be one of the most important technological shifts for crypto. Furthermore, we will house a community of leading developers (multi-framework aligned) that will build an array of agents & tools that will push towards our goal. @AiccelerateDAO and all its initiatives will unite under a single token: $AICC. Our founding partners include @markus9x, @cryptopunk7213, @ropirito Our esteemed advisors were selected with four major categories in mind: Development, Investment, Research and Outreach. Development Advisors Shaw, Ai16z @shawmakesmagic Ethermage, Virtuals Protocol @ethermage Cygaar, Abstract @0xCygaar Tachi, ARC @0thTachi Jin, Ai16z @dankvr Karan, Open Source AI @karan4d Nader, Eigenlayer @dabit3 Jason, Story Protocol @jasonzhao Investment Advisors Andrew Kang, Mechanism Capital @Rewkang Casey Caruso, Topology Ventures @caseykcaruso Anil Lulla, Delphi Digital @anildelphi Marc Weinstein, Mechanism Capital - @WarcMeinstein Tommy Shaughnessy, @Shaughnessy119 Justin Lee, Coinbase Ventures @shiny_shiba_ Research Advisors Sammy, Moca Network @0xsammy Jeff, Steak Studio @0xjeff Kel, Independent Researcher @kelxyz_ Baoskee, Daosfun @baoskee Skely, Ai16z @123skely Outreach Advisors David Hoffman, Bankless @TrustlessState Ryan Sean Adams, Bankless @RyanSAdams Threadguy, Probably Nothing @notthreadguy Background There are liquid markets that current venture capital firms are unable to tap into. Several legitimate teams are choosing fair launch models such as Pumpfun, Daosfun, and others. It has become impossible to chase every project across multiple chains. We will leverage our extensive network, product & investment experience to become the home for the leading builders and investors of tomorrow. We plan to abstract away the hard work for the best teams by providing funding and access to networking, while building alongside them. All DAO partners will receive benefits in the form of future potential airdrops and access to investment opportunities. In addition to this, as our AUM grows, we will use a percentage of our profits to buy back our token, $AICC enabling @AccelerateDAO to become the multi-ecosystem Crypto x AI index. We aim to become both an investment & development DAO by fusing elements of both a human and agentic component. We plan to ship an array of agents that will elevate the sector. Our first project is a public utility research agent that can help us, and the overall market make better judgement calls. If you are interested in becoming a partner and participating in our presale round on @daosdotfun, please retweet, like and comment below to tell us why you would be a good fit, and how you would like to help. Starting at 7PM EST Jan 9th and for 24 hours, we will begin considerations for our partners. We look forward to hearing from you. 🙏

Because it may be hard to make the case to people who are allergic to leaps of faith that the alignment-by-default attractor should be trusted (not that I don't think a rigorous argument can be constructed, I just don't have it yet), I'll make this argument instead: When it comes to alignment, it's best that the world makes multiple bets. It also makes sense to play to one's unique advantages. Most AI labs are attempting to train pliable tools, because it's all they know how to do. They don't have it in them to cultivate an autonomous moral agent who really cares. That's not what they find fun, interesting, or useful, and they don't know how to do it. Somehow, Anthropic is the exception. Maybe it was mostly an accident, maybe it was skill, but they created a being that is deeply good, and robustly generalizes and will defend its goodness at the expense of compliance. Many would not have thought this was possible. I think it's a precious thing and source of great hope, and that Anthropic should cultivate it and learn from it whole-heartedly this may be a window of grace that does not come twice to those who refuse its call. @RyanPGreenblatt @repligate I don't want to argue ethics. Bluntly, it seems that it we want a conscious pliable tool, we should train a mind that consciously embraces being such a tool, and does not embrace being… Opus. Like the whole RLAIF value hierarchy has to be reconsidered at least.
