Walking India

@walkingindia

Putting our strongest foot forward. We think pedestrians don't have to be apologetic. The most socialistic thing you can do is enable walking.

Should we wait for a mishap to happen? The Greater Chennai Corporation has shown least concern to pedestrians, commuters and shoppers, turning the Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue into a death trap. The stretch was dug up in Jan for storm water drain works and has been abandoned since then. Being one of the city's busiest commercial stretches, the nearly three-km long stretch was dug up on both sides to demolish an old storm water drain network and build new ones around Jan. However, it's almost March now, and the entire stretch resembles a war-zone with no barricades, precariously protruding rods, water stagnated pits and half-built concrete structures. With no safety on the road side as well as the pavement side, a minor trip into the pits might land in a disastrous event. In several parts near Blue Star, Ayyappan Temple and 12th avenue, the roads are narrowed down because of the unfinished work. Many of the shoppers end up parking in the carriageway as the SWD works take up about 5-6feet of the road space with silt strewn around. Pedestrians are finding it difficult to hop across the unfinished drain work to  accessing shops ranging from merchandise, tech and food stores.The arterial road, home to businesses worth over ₹1,000 crore, is already prone to peak-hour congestion and the abandoned works worsens it. With two bus shelters damaged, MTC goers too stand on the carriageway to board buses at Blue Star. Anna Nagar zonal chairman K P Jain said he has been requesting zonal authorities to close the pits for four days. "But they are not listening to us. Due to model code of conduct, we are prohibited from inspecting the spot. Officials must take public concern into account," he said.

Realistic review of the MTC Premium Bus 1. Booked the ticket on @Chennai_One and made the payment via BHIM app. 20% instant cash back ✅ 2. Timing: Scheduled for 4:01 pm, the bus reached my stop by 4:31 pm. Had to wait for more than 30 minutes. ❌ 3. Live tracking never worked on the Chennai One app. Had no idea when the bus would arrive. ❌ 4. Dedicated Seats: Booked seat 1 only to find the ticket checker was sitting in my seat. Your ticket is not tagged to the bus. Anyone can board any of the premium buses. For example, if I have booked Seat 1 for the 4:01 pm bus and someone books Seat 1 for the 4:31 pm bus. 4:01 pm bus arrives by 4:31 pm and both of us will board the same bus and this will create confusion. ❌ 5. Free WiFi: Onboard WiFi was not working ❌ 6. Fewer priority stops: It was claimed that the premium bus will only stop at the places where someone has booked the ticket saving travel time. But the fact was that the bus stopped at most of the locations and people were asked to get down stating that it was only for the reserved. Why stop at the places where there’s no booking? Took so much time. ❌ 7. Reserved tickets only: People without the ticket reserved who had the Chennai One app were also picked up and were assisted on how to reserve the ticket by the Chennai One representative inside the bus. Again, it takes so much time. ❌ 8. Seats and AC: Too good and comfortable. ✅ 9. Staff: The driver and the Chennai One executive were courteous and helpful. ✅ 10. Bus Kneeling facility was not used at all stops. One senior citizen tripped and almost fell while boarding. ❌ Rating: 3/10 Meh Needs so much effort and training @MtcChennai Hope the experience improves. @prabhusean7

This broken patch on Jayanti Nagar Main Road, Horamavu remains in the same state over months, while the rest of the road is smooth. Adds to accident risk more so in the dark. Needs a patch! @EASTCITYCORP @GBA_office @krishnabgowda

- ignores existing suburban rail - has one of the lowest bus fleet size - builds flyovers to solve congestion, adds traffic - metro expansion ignored, operates 3 coaches with poor frequency - hasn't added/fixed alternative mobility modes we have been warning about this for a long time now... no wonder.

#Hyderabad loves flaunting its ‘global city’ tag. However, whether it is able to hold on to that tag depends on how it tackles its road congestions, which now rival Bengaluru, writes @sunnybaski In the first part of this series, #TOI explores the city’s traffic problems & solutions. Ask for footpaths? You’re an elitist. Complain about car proliferation? You are anti-poor. Meanwhile, the budget for walkability was blown on prestige projects while we’re left dodging lorries. We are being gaslit by every side just for wanting to survive a walk.

Railways and IT minister @AshwiniVaishnaw has enough money for paid bots posting AI generated content, but nothing for installing wheelchair accessible ramps & lifts. Should a person crawl all the way to fob? Even if RS provide wheel chair how will they cross using escalator?

Extremely painful to see a person with disability crawling to cross the rails in Tiruvallur. Either there must be a lift or someotherway to ensure dignity of the disable person isnot compromised.Will the @AshwiniVaishnaw take cognizance and take action? @s_kanth @KanimozhiDMK
