Tigray’s Children Are Denied School Again- Call for Action What is happening in Tigray today is intolerable and it must be called out with absolute moral clarity. After three years of war (2020-22) that already interrupted every child’s education, the Ethiopian government is once again choking Tigray’s school system and pushing an entire generation further into darkness. Across Tigray, members of the education community held protests to sound the alarm: severe budget restrictions are crippling schools, starving teachers, and denying children their basic right to learn. Their message is painfully clear: “Teachers shall not teach us while starving.” And they are right. No education system can function when: - Civil servants go months without pay - Banks remain closed or restricted, blocking families from accessing their own money - Businesses and commodities are strangled at checkpoints, preventing school supplies and daily essentials from reaching communities - Fuel is restricted, making school transport, power, and basic logistics impossible These are not administrative inconveniences. They are deliberate policy choices, choices that punish children, parents, and educators who have already endured a genocide, a complete blackout, and years of trauma. A government that denies children their right to education is not protecting stability; it is manufacturing future instability, poverty, and despair. Tigray’s children have already lost more than three years of schooling during the 2020–22 war. To disrupt their learning again, through economic blockades, salary suspensions, and financial strangulation, is an assault on their future and a clear violation of their human rights. Education is not a privilege to be weaponized.
It is a right, non‑negotiable, universal, and protected under international law. The world cannot remain silent while Tigray’s children are pushed out of the classroom once again. Their teachers cannot teach while starving. Their parents cannot support them under economic suffocation. And their communities cannot rebuild without a functioning education system. Tigray’s children deserve better. They deserve dignity, stability, and a future, not another man‑made barrier standing between them and a classroom. #SaveTigraysChildren #IwasOneOfThem #TeachersNotTargets #SchoolsNotTargets @kirosgu @UNESCO_Addis @AUC_PAPS @uap_zlecaf @_AfricanUnion @WHO @DrTedros @AsstSecStateAF @TiborPNagyJr @HPN4Tigray @PillarMMedia @PJTinter @GezanaBBT @martinplaut @addisstandard @TsedaleLemma @Tseday @AJENews @nytimes @tklebrhanw @reda_getachew @ProfKindeya @ProfKinfe @aksumuniv @AksumHospi4940 @MekUniETH @ayder_hospital

PublicHealthMessage#3: Open Call to Avert Another Genocidal War in Ethiopia I am urgently appealing to U.S. and international leaders to take immediate action to prevent the escalation towards large‑scale conflict in Ethiopia, one that risks evolving into another genocidal war in Tigray and destabilizing the entire Horn of Africa. It’s already began 3 days ago and a drone attack has already been reported in my home state not far from my hometown.  In 2022, under U.S. leadership and with African Union facilitation, the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA) was signed. Since then, the Ethiopian government has repeatedly violated the agreement, including banning the very party that signed it and agreed with. Months ago, I warned of an imminent return to war:  ethiopiainsight.substack.com/p/abiys-war-sc… This was followed with additional petitions, emails, and public appeals from thousands of Ethiopians and allies. Despite those appeals the hostilities have now resumed. Reports indicate renewed military operations in western Tigray, as well as drone strikes in Enticho killing civilians and destroying what’s becoming rare due to blockade food commodities.  At the same time, Ethiopia is reportedly purchasing fighter jets from Russia and mobilizing irregular militias, further escalating risk to millions. This was in display at the recent anniversary celebration of the regime’s Air Force flanked by AFRICOM commander and Dupty US Secretary of.  As a public health expert, Peace Laureate of APHA, and someone who lost family, colleagues, research infrastructure, and trainees during the 2020–2022 Tigray genocide, I cannot stay silent. Why this matters now Recent images and diplomatic engagements involving U.S. officials with Ethiopian military leaders, some of whom oversee air forces implicated in past mass civilian casualties, have caused deep concern among affected communities. Conflicting messages about U.S. military cooperation have only added confusion. This moment calls for clarity and principled leadership. A critical question must be asked. Is the United States prepared to take swift and decisive diplomatic action to uphold the Pretoria Agreement and prevent a catastrophic return to full scale war? Millions of civilians, across Tigray, Amhara, Oromia, and beyond, remain at extreme risk. Over 20 million are in famine like conditions and 3-5 million of those in Tigray are under life threatening conditions. Only robust enforcement of COHA can prevent further atrocities. I urgently call on the U.S. government and international community to: 1. Demand an immediate cessation of hostilities; 2. Support independent monitoring and verification; 3. Publicly reaffirm and enforce full implementation of the Pretoria/COHA Agreement, including protection of civilians and demilitarization.  The cost of inaction will be enormous, humanitarian, geopolitical, and financial. Our peer‑reviewed research documents the devastating human toll of drone and jet attacks during the previous conflict: link.springer.com/article/10.118… Failure to act risks another genocide, regional destabilization, and mass displacement. Now is the time to act. I respectfully urge U.S. officials, policy leaders to take possible action to save millions and concerned citizens to review recent developments, contact congressional representatives, and press for immediate, principled engagement. The media that largely ignored the last conflict, often described as the hidden deadliest war, must now show its humanity and recognize the worth of African lives. Remember, this region is home to Lucy, the earliest known hominid fossil, underscoring its significance as one of the cradles of human origin! For reference: Defense report on new aircraft deliveries to Ethiopia: x.com/profmulugeta/s… Thank you for your attention at this critical moment. 🚨 The drone attacks have reportedly started - see the pictures coming from the Enticho area of Tigray central zone. Unless this is stopped before it gets out of control, the humanitarian crisis and the loss of lives is going to be scarily devastating! I’m heartbroken and disappointed that Abiy’s regime didn’t heed the advise, reportedly given, by the US Dupty Sec of State @DeputySecState and @USAfricaCommand People who were visiting Tigray are now stranded in Tigray due to @flyethiopian cancelling flights to all airports in Tigray. The sad news is that the airline is selling tickets that wouldn’t honor to its customers- not surprising since same airline is used to transport Ethiopian military personnel and equipment. Banks are also cash dry which created economic anxiety in the region. @_AfricanUnion @AsstSecStateAF @UN @antonioguterres CC @Trevornoah @miaamormottley

@daniel_berhane @KjetilTronvoll Why is this a problem? You know that ‘there are no constant friends or enemies’ in politics- neither in Africa nor in the West. How did u feel about Carney’s or UK PM’s visits to China? B/s u don’t like Isaias (neither do we as a genocider) doesn’t change political reality.

@KjetilTronvoll Isaias supports and opposes secession based on convenience. He used to arm SPLM rebels to undermine Al-Bashir. But started lamenting their independence when the new Republic of South Sudan became too close to EPRDF - or janda woyane, as he likes to call it.

Interesting to observe that an Eritrea pro-regime account is advocating for Tigray to activate Article 39 in Ethiopia constitution and seced from the federation. The very principle and constitution Pres. Isaias Afwerki has condemned since 1993 and intensly worked to undermine.🙄

News: Flights to #Tigray remain suspended, affecting even Interim Administration president’s scheduled Addis visit The continued suspension of #Ethiopian Airlines flights to Tigray has disrupted official travel, with Tigray Interim Administration President Tadesse Worede confirming that his planned visit to #Addis_Abeba did not take place due to the flight cancellations. Asked by Addis Standard whether his visit was hindered by the suspension of flights, President Tadesse responded, “Yes.” Flights to airports in Tigray, including #Mekelle, #Axum, #Shire, and #Humera, remained suspended on Friday, with Ethiopian Airlines yet to provide an official explanation for the disruption. An Addis Standard reporter on the ground confirmed airline ticket office, however, remained open and continued providing services, while flight operations at the airport remained suspended. Meanwhile, road transportation in parts of Southern Tigray has also been disrupted. Transport movement along the #Woldiya#Kobo#Alamata corridor remains limited, while displacement, military repositioning, and restricted banking services are being reported in Southern Tigray and surrounding areas, according to information obtained by Addis Standard from local sources. In a related development, Ethiopian Airlines has suspended flights from Addis Ababa to Mekelle and other airports in the Tigray region since January 29. While the airline has not issued an official explanation, passengers received text messages stating that flights were canceled due to “unplanned circumstances.” Separately, unverified reports indicated that clashes are taking place between Tigray forces and federal troops in Tselemti, a district in Tigray’s northwestern zone. Neither the federal government nor the Tigray regional Interim administration has released an official statement regarding the alleged fighting.
