THE UNITED STATES MUST NOT LIFT SANCTIONS ON ERITREA WITHOUT REAL REFORM. Reports that the United States may lift sanctions on Eritrea should alarm anyone who cares about human rights, accountability, and the credibility of U.S. foreign policy. Eritrea, under Totalitarian Isaias Afwerki, has operated for decades without elections, without a constitution in practice, and without independent institutions. There is no free press. Journalists have disappeared. Political prisoners are held indefinitely without trial. Religious freedoms are restricted. Citizens are subjected to a system of indefinite national service that has been widely described as forced labor. These are not isolated allegations they are consistent findings documented over many years by international human rights organizations. And yet, despite this reality, there are discussions about lifting sanctions not because conditions have improved, not because reforms have taken place, but because of shifting geopolitical interests in the Red Sea. Yes, Eritrea is strategically located. Yes, regional security matters. But if strategic value becomes the only standard, then human rights become negotiable and that sets a dangerous precedent. Lifting sanctions on Eritrea without clear, measurable, and verified reforms would send a message to the world: that a government can systematically repress its people for decades and still be rewarded when it becomes politically convenient. Sanctions are not perfect, but they are one of the few non-military tools available to apply pressure and demand accountability. Removing them without conditions removes leverage and abandons those who continue to suffer under repression. If there is to be any shift in policy, it must be tied to concrete actions: – The release of political prisoners – An end to indefinite military conscription – The allowance of independent media and civil society – Basic guarantees of human rights and rule of law Without these, engagement risks becoming endorsement. This is a moment that will define whether the United States truly stands by the values it promotes globally, or whether those values are set aside when they become inconvenient.
