Mohammad Taghavi and Akbar Daneshvarkar were executed this morning in Ghezelhesar prison. Their lawyers and family members were not informed in advance of the planned execution.
Dr. Mai Sato, UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran, had previously raised serious concerns about the case of Taghavi and Daneshvarkar, noting that “they have received death sentences based on their alleged connections with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI).”
Mai Sato highlighted that the two prisoners, along with other four political prisoners, Babak Alipour, Vahid Bani Amerian, Pouya Ghobadi, and Abolhassan Montazer were subjected to torture and sentenced to death after an unfair trial. She reported that “Mr. Daneshvarkar spent two months in solitary confinement, was denied family contact and counsel. Mr. Taghavi Sangdehi spent 244 days in solitary confinement and more than eight months without access to legal counsel. Mr. Daneshvarkar was beaten during a home raid and threatened with the arrest of his wife and child.”
