🌍 The East African Community (EAC) is taking a bold step towards healthier food systems. This week, #IamAPHRC convened regional policymakers, researchers, and public health experts to discuss the development of a common Nutrient Profile Model for the region. As diet-related Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) continue to rise and cross-border food trade expands across the EAC, there's a growing need for a unified regional approach to food regulation — one that protects public health. A harmonized food regulation EAC approach means: ✅ Consistent regulatory action on unhealthy foods across borders ✅ Shared expertise for stronger, evidence-based outcomes ✅ Food policies that are gender-responsive and equitable by design. #FoodPolicy #EAC #NCDs #HealthyFoodEnvironments #APHRCResearch #WeAreAfrica @IDRC_CRDI @MOH_Kenya @UNICEFKenya @ckyobutungi @amveyange @shukrifmohamed @hope_shete @gershim_asiki @KiruiCaliph1 @mwijne @NicholasEtyang @CharityWaweru @RatemoJuliet @williamsila @DorcasOdhiambo @MangwanaVJ @deborahndlovu @ndonyesarah

Deborah Neumbe of @Makerere, the first recipient of the Pauline Bakibinga Memorial Scholarship, shares how targeted support, mentorship, and digital innovation helped turn a research idea into rMAP-WEB. The user-friendly platform is advancing antimicrobial resistance surveillance and informing public health decision-making. Established in honour of the late Dr. Pauline Bakibinga, the scholarship supports promising young women in #EastAfrica working in digital health, reflecting APHRC’s commitment to equity, excellence, and research that transforms lives. 📕 Read the full blog: aphrc.org/blogarticle/a-… #IamAPHRC #WomenInScience #DigitalHealth #AMR @MbararaUST @CKyobutungi @Waithaka_KE @amveyange @FlorahKarimi @DKadengye @cwkabiru @agnes_kiragga @kadzomudzo @LucyWakiaga @atiabu @CARTAfrica @DMdiarafa @RatemoJuliet @williamsila @DorcasOdhiambo @MangwanaVJ @deborahndlovu @ndonyesarah

I am a Senior Medical Officer (MBChB, University of Nairobi) with 9 years of clinical experience. Regarding claims of miraculous HIV/AIDS healing at Prophet Owuor’s church, I sought to answer the following questions: 1. Is the patient real? 2. Was the patient confirmed HIV-positive and enrolled on care, as documented in the NASCOP database? 3. Was there a negative test result after being on ARVs, including antigen/antibody testing (ELISA) and DNA PCR? 4. Was the patient’s file officially closed by their own doctors or medical team? 5. Has the patient remained clinically stable/improved after cessation of ARVs under medical supervision, and for how long? 6. Is the patient currently HIV-negative? When I found that all these criteria were met 100%, I realized that there comes a time when #ScienceBows @KmpdcOfficial @MOH_Kenya

#IamAPHRC staff today participated in an open conversation on research equity, publishing practices and capacity strengthening with @seyeabimbola a renowned global health champion. This engagement is part of the build up activities that the Center is hosting ahead of the 2025 Africa Health and Development Annual Research Symposium (AHDARS) that will be held later this week. Some of the key highlights from today’s session include: ✅ Looking ahead to the future of academic publishing: In five years, it's hard to imagine a world where AI isn't playing a role in peer review. If AI can make work more efficient, it’s only a matter of time before one leading journal sets the example. None of this is guaranteed but it’s a shift we need to prepare for. ✅ Publishing for recognition vs. impact: Publishing for recognition alone misses the mark. We shouldn’t just aim to be seen, our work should create real impact. ✅ Making the African story heard: Change won’t come unless we claim our own space. Nobody else will tell the African story for us. It’s up to us to do the work, trust in its value, and deliver it to the audience who needs to hear it, in its most powerful form. #AHDARS2025 #APHRCResearch #PoweringAfricasHealthFuture #DecolonizeHealth @CARTAfrica @Countdown2030 @Zero_Hunger_Ke @amveyange @CKyobutungi @RatemoJuliet @DMdiarafa @deborahndlovu @williamsila @Chris_Maero @dia_diama @ChristineGer22 @ndonyesarah @njerimbuthia @DorcasOdhiambo @MangwanaVJ @Hope_shete @MuliDavis @Wekesah @Charity_Waweru @Waithaka_KE @isabelmutuku1 @Liz_Kimani @FlorahKarimi @cwkabiru

Poor health outcomes across Sub-Saharan Africa are increasingly linked to the growing influence of alcohol, ultra-processed food, and fossil fuel industries. To better understand and navigate their effects on health, APHRC has launched the Addressing the Commercial Determinants of Health in Sub-Saharan Africa (ACORDS) project. Over the next four years, this study will generate evidence to inform better policies and support healthier communities. The launch brought together government officials, researchers, and civil society to discuss: ✅ Pathways to transforming dietary habits for better health outcomes ✅ Regulatory interventions to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases ✅ Strengthening research partnerships to counter industry influence on policy #APHRCResearch #WeAreAfrica @KNUSTGH @MOH_Kenya @shukrifmohamed @KiruiCaliph1 @hope_shete @dia_diama @Stevewainainax @lamechmutava @Waithaka_KE @christineger22 @RatemoJuliet @DMdiarafa @amveyange @CKyobutungi

🚨 Webinar Alert Millions across Africa still suffer from Neglected Tropical Diseases, driven by poverty and limited access to healthcare. WHO reports that nearly one in five people globally still need interventions. A major challenge remains: turning research into policy. This slows progress toward the WHO 2030 NTD Roadmap and the African Union’s Continental Framework. Join #IamAPHRC and DNDi for a webinar with experts and policymakers on translating evidence into meaningful action. 📅 Nov 6, 2025 │ 🕒 15:00 EAT 🔗 Register here: buff.ly/PYMmPRq #APHRCResearch #beatNTDs #PublicHealth #AfricaHealth #GlobalHealth @MOH_Kenya @jkkotut @DMdiarafa @mangwanavj @doris_omao @Waithaka_KE @christineger22 @RatemoJuliet @DMdiarafa @amveyange @CKyobutungi
