I’m glad to learn that US Secretary of State @SecRubio held talks with Abiy Ahmed on March 27, marking the 1st known official engagement since President Trump @POTUS assumed office. Hope they @AsstSecStateAF @TiborPNagyJr @DrJPPham will release the readout of the discussion but according to a statement attributed to Spokesperson Tammy Bruce @HeyTammyBruce , the talks focused on efforts to “strengthen the bilateral relationship around mutual priorities,” including regional stability. Rubio also “reaffirmed U.S. support for a peaceful and prosperous Ethiopia,” the statement noted. Given that the U.S. has been involved in the signing of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (#COHA) serving as “both a participant and an observer”, hope this first official meeting has addressed the gap created after @MikeHammerUSA who played a significant role to end the two-year war in #Tigray. As a Tigrayan American who has family and collaborative global health programs in the region, I would like to see the continued involvement of the US in supporting the full implementation of the #COHA which asks for return of displaced persons, accountability and reconciliation, and the withdrawal of “non-Ethiopian National Defense Forces” from Tigray among other obligations given to the #TPLF and Ethiopia. There is a tense situation wherein Abiy Ahmed is posturing for another round of war- this time against #Tigray, #Eritrea and continuation of its ongoing conflict in #Amhara and #Oromia regions. It’s important that the US plays its role of stopping this madness! The time to act is now!
