In 2022, Parents all over the USA were exposing the sexually graphic books pushed into their local schools. Many were rightly angry with their school districts for ordering the books, and many were angry with the book vendors who turned on their own customers throwing school districts under the bus. Follett, based near Chicago, got a lot of heat over this and proposed use of a process that would keep parents informed of what their kids checked out at school. The ALA quickly put a stop to Follett pursuing parental notification of children’s signed out books. This link is to a 2022 article on the ALA’s Intellectual Freedom blog describing how librarians put a rapid stop, using threats, to a proposed program that would have allowed parental notification of school library books signed out by their children. The proposed parental notification system was something developed by the Follett company (the leading management system for school libraries nationwide). Follett had apparently come up with the strategy to encourage parent involvement in response to complaints about sexually explicit content and new parental rights legislation. Some librarians threatened to cancel their school’s Follett accounts if parents were notified about Children’s book selections. Follett shelved the proposal. If you click in the link below, you will see “Oops” that the page doesn’t exist any longer. These are times when I am SO grateful for the Wayback Machine (archive.org) and how we can prove that the article can still be found. @lgiles @occupylibraries @JaredLPatterson Rep Goodwin claimed it is the responsibility of the professional reviews, such as Kirkus, but they volley back and claim it’s the responsibility of the gatekeepers (librarians). I agree with unless publishers provide content warnings. Kirkus, April 2022

@occupylibraries @JaredLPatterson School boards admit they don't read what they purchase. Rep Goodwin admitted multiple times librarians don't read what they expose children to. Who's supposed to read the content to ensure suitability? The taxpayer? Parent? Or the person hired to curate the library?

@BYECAHELLOTEXAS This is hilarious and reminds me of when I had to say “masochistic” in a Texas house Ed hearing in reference to content that should not be allowed in school library books (such as Feral Sins 🤮)! I could not get the word out!!! Complete opposite of delicately but … 😂

@MQSullivan @Burrows4TX It looks like this is a special rule that is in the bottom section and could only have the option to be enacted if the Governor declares a state of emergency from a pandemic.

Keller ISD is a great example of a school district who voted to PROTECT their students this year! It's unfortunate that policies like these even have to be implemented but they are necessary due to the predatory nature of gender ideology.

@Bentley4Texas @aaronh125 This is in the Sharper Image catalog that just came out … along with many kid toys. I’ve always enjoyed this catalogue for tech ideas for KIDS and have given it to mine to find ideas. Sex toys should be in adult view only. Always.

@aaronh125 So far, it's happened in combination with sexual performance. Giving a child a sex toy is grooming, and grooming is always meant to lead to physical sexual abuse. Certain acts of grooming are easy to identify and should be illegal before the actual physical abuse happens.

Would it surprise you to know that it's not illegal in Texas for your 13 year old daughter's soccer coach to give her a sex toy? It should be. We need to do a better job protecting Texas children. #txlege

@brianeharrison @TexasScorecard As it references in the article, $6,000 per pupil is the number that is commonly discussed / reported rather than $12,000. What is the reason for that discrepancy in how the per pupil allotment is perceived / discussed?

I read, and listened to the audiobook, of Tricks. It was available to kids 5th grade and up. Which explicit sex scene should I read and discuss with my 11 year old first? The three way sex scene? The wet descriptive anal sex scene? The priest’s mommy sexual fetishes?

We do not fight this fight for our kids alone. We fight it for those students who are advanced readers, and whose parent’s parent well, but cannot read every page of every book.

@JaredLPatterson They also reinstated “Empire of Storms.” GoodReads “popular sexually explicit books” list includes this book alongside the the “Fifty Shades of Grey” series. A teen should not unknowingly pick up a book such as this at their school and be exposed to explicit, detailed sex scenes.

@ShawnieT146 Thank you for choosing your counsel wisely! “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:1-2

Well said Christin!! “When we see superintendents and board trustees who want to debate the law, rather than comply with it, we have a problem.” 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 @PIPElineSBISD @htxkidsfirst @ZebraStrongMama @occupylibraries @Bentley4Texas
Christin Bentley SD-1 SREC@Bentley4Texas

This is exactly why the @TexasGOP must continue to endorse in non-partisan school board races. There is nothing conservative or Republican about a school board trustee who applies the Miller test to a book reconsideration because she feels like it. The modified Miller test isn't written into HB 900, other than what exisists in the definition of harmful materials in Texas penal code. It DOES NOT apply to the mandated standards that prohibit sexually explicit and pervasively vulgar books in Texas public schools. Believe me, I made sure of that. When we see superintendents and board trustees who want to debate the law, rather than comply with it, we have a problem. Do these board trustees think they get to debate whether or not they have to stop at a traffic light or stop sign, too? The debate is over. The law is the law. Comply with it. And, as far as this board trustee is concerned. I look forward to the SREC endorsing her Republican opponent. @rdgarcia03 #txlege @teainfo @TXSBOE

Great job, @katyisd, for ensuring sexually explicit materials don't end up in your library collections! It would've been nice if vendors had to comply with the law and not sell books to Texas schools that break our laws, but instead, librarians will have to do their due diligence. And, I'm okay with that. txftrp.org/how_to_break_t…
