#Update: US says it has limited ability to assist dual nationals detained in Eritrea. The United States has warned it has limited ability to assist dual nationals detained in Eritrea, citing the Eritrean regimes refusal to recognize dual citizenship, as concerns persist over cases involving U.S.-Eritrean detainees. The U.S. State Department says Eritrean authorities treat individuals holding both U.S. and Eritrean nationality solely as Eritrean citizens, restricting Washington’s capacity to provide consular assistance. “Dual U.S.-Eritrean citizens are considered Eritrean nationals by the Eritrean regime,” the department states in its travel guidance, adding that this “limits our ability to provide consular services.” Human rights groups and official records point to several cases involving individuals with U.S. ties detained in Eritrea. Ciham Ali Abdu, a U.S. citizen, was arrested in 2012 at the age of 15 while attempting to leave Eritrea and has been held incommunicado since, according to Amnesty International. Aster Yohannes, who had lived in the United States, was detained at Asmara airport in December 2003 after returning to the country. Her whereabouts remain unknown. Earlier cases include Eritrean employees of the U.S. Embassy, such as Ali Alamin and Kiflom Ghebremichael, arrested on Oct. 11, 2001 and held without charge, according to U.S. government statements. Additional arrests of embassy-linked staff were reported in 2005, including Fitwi Gezae and Biniam Girmay, though details remain limited. Rights groups say detainees in Eritrea are often held without charge or trial, with families denied information about their whereabouts. In the case of Ciham Ali Abdu, Eritrean authorities have rejected her U.S. citizenship status and have not disclosed details of her detention, according to advocacy groups and former officials. The Eritrean regime has not publicly commented on individual detention cases and has historically defended such actions as matters of national sovereignty. Eritrea has long been criticized by international organizations for arbitrary detention practices and restrictions on civil liberties. For dual nationals, the lack of recognition of dual citizenship creates a legal grey area that effectively blocks foreign diplomatic intervention, leaving detainees with little external recourse. The U.S. State Department continues to advise American citizens of Eritrean origin to carefully consider the risks before traveling to the country.

US facilities like Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti, Emirati/Israeli-linked sites in Somaliland (recently recognized by Israel), and Eritrean ports used arms flows could become targets for Iranian or Houthi retaliation. #AccountabilityNow #EndRepression #JusticeForEritreans #Eritrea

Agree 100% @TiborPNagyJr. It’s impossible to ignore the deep contradiction—openly praising Isaias Afwerki while choosing to live in democratic societies that guarantee the very freedoms denied back home in Eritrea. This isn’t just hypocrisy—it’s part of a broader system of silence and control. The regime doesn’t only repress its people inside Eritrea; it extends its reach globally through transnational repression—intimidating, monitoring, and attempting to silence Eritreans in the diaspora who dare to speak out. Meanwhile, some abroad amplify propaganda while enjoying free speech on platforms like X—a freedom Eritreans inside the country don’t even have. That’s exactly why the #BlueRevolution matters. It represents a growing movement of Eritreans—both inside and outside the country—who are rejecting fear, rejecting dictatorship, and demanding accountability, justice, and basic human rights. It’s about breaking the cycle of intimidation and exposing the truth, no matter where it comes from. You can’t celebrate oppression from a distance while benefiting from freedom up close. The Eritrean people deserve better—and the world is starting to see through the contradictions. #BlueRevolution #Eritrea #TransnationalRepression #NoMorePFDJTerror #RegimeChangeInEritrea

Diaspora Eritreans in Norway with dual citizenship constitute the largest group of players - 3 - on the Eritrea National football team in the 2027 African Cup of Nations AFCON)! A result of the repressive regime, and an exodus of refugees over two decades.

Agreed! I would go further--any Eritrean supporter of Isaias in the US or West should "self-deport" to Eritrea!

I shake my head at Eritrean diaspora which sings the praises of dictator Isaias. If he's so great, why don't they go home to his "paradise" instead of staying in corrupt West? Of course, in Eritrea, they couldn't insult people on X due to no internet. Isn't hypocrisy wonderful?!

Eritrean national football team's squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers relies heavily on diaspora players who live outside Eritrea and hold second or dual citizenship. Home-based players often defect and seek political asylum abroad during away matches—a pattern linked to the country's indefinite national/military service policies, with over 60 defections since 2009. Diaspora players are now being actively called up as a “fix” for the team. Nearly the entire home-based national team had previously fled, forcing the federation to turn to foreign-based players. Only a small number of local (home-based) players are selected. Eritrea is playing today Eswatini in Morocco today. G00D LUCK. The full roster below not confirmed
