The American-Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee
Escalating Repression in Ethiopia: The Targeting of Tewodros Kassahun (Teddy Afro) the Erosion of Civic Space The Ethiopian American Public Affairs Committee (AEPAC) expresses deep concern over the continued deterioration of civic and public space in Ethiopia, marked by widespread detentions, pressure on religious institutions, and recent actions affecting prominent cultural figures. Credible reports from human rights organizations indicate that more than 300 elected officials—including parliamentarians, journalists, and civil servants—have remained imprisoned for over two years, raising serious concerns about due process and the rule of law. Concurrently, there is increasing evidence of pressure on longstanding religious institutions, including the Ethiopian Orthodox Church—one of the world’s oldest Christian traditions—further signaling a contraction of fundamental freedoms and institutional independence. Recent developments involving Tewodros Kassahun (Teddy Afro), one of Ethiopia’s most influential cultural voices, further underscore these concerns. Since the release of his album Etorika, reports indicate that his studio has been looted and individuals associated with his organization have been detained. According to Deutsche Welle, several individuals connected to his team, including a close associate and marketing manager, are reportedly in custody. These developments come at a time when the government is preparing to conduct national elections. Observers have raised serious concerns about whether such conditions—marked by arrests, restrictions, reported intimidation, and ongoing armed conflict across several regions—can support a credible democratic process. International assessments, including global press freedom and civil liberties reports, continue to rank Ethiopia among countries facing significant challenges in these areas. AEPAC recognizes that the long-term resolution to Ethiopia’s complex political and social challenges ultimately rests with the Ethiopian people through inclusive and constructive dialogue. At the same time, international partners who are invested in regional stability should consider the following: Democratic legitimacy requires conditions of freedom — Elections conducted amid mass detentions, intimidation, and restricted civic space risk undermining credibility and public trust. Allegations of large-scale financial misconduct demand scrutiny — As reported by Addis Reporter, an estimated 100 billion birr has reportedly been diverted from government coffers through coordinated schemes. If substantiated, this represents a profound breach of public trust and a direct loss of resources intended to serve the Ethiopian people. Entrenched high-level corruption undermines governance — Systemic corruption at the highest levels erodes institutional integrity, weakens the rule of law, and diminishes public confidence in government. Accountability is essential for stability — Sustained governance without accountability erodes institutions, fuels long-term instability, and ultimately compromises national cohesion. Protection of civil society and cultural voices matters — Actions affecting artists, journalists, and religious institutions signal broader constraints on freedom of expression. Advancing business interests cannot occur in a vacuum — Economic engagement is sustainable only when grounded in stability, rule of law, and accountable leadership —not in environments marked by ongoing abuses without consequence. Policy alignment is critical — Western nations seeking regional stability should prioritize policies that reinforce transparency, human rights, and responsible governance. As part of this broader engagement, AEPAC encourages the U.S. Congress to consider measures such as House Resolution 937 as one avenue to express its position and support democratic principles, accountability, and the protection of fundamental rights in Ethiopia. 👇👇🔗🖇️ facebook.com/share/1DpdB2FG… @WhiteHouse @StateDept @USEmbassyAddis @UAEthio @UNOSAPG @VP @realDonaldTrump @TheIRD, @StateDRL, @AsstSecStateAF, @richghazal, @markdtooley, @OrthodoxyNews, @MikeHammerUSA, @USEmbassyAddis @indefchristians,@RepJohnJames,@housegop, @Repsarajacobs, @YoungKimCA, @RepJimBaird, @CongressmanKean,@RepMillsPress, @RepGaramendi,@jakejsullivan, @IMFNews, @SecBlinken, @StateDept, @JusticeOfficeUS, @WorldBank, @WorldBankAfrica, @StateIRF, @USCIRF, @IrfSecretariat, @Sean_ADFIntl,@michaelgwaltz,@RepMarkWalker,@RepRileyMoore,@TomColeOk04,@HouseAppropsGOP

(Zehabesha News) Federal Police have detained the graphic designer who created the artwork for Teddy Afro, signaling a continued crackdown on individuals associated with the prominent artist following the recent release of his music album, "Etorika." According to information received by ZeHabesha today, Dawit, the graphic designer responsible for designing all the covers for Teddy Afro's songs, was taken into custody. Family sources disclosed that federal police officers had searched Dawit's residence yesterday but were unable to find him at the time. However, authorities tracked him down and apprehended him today at a friend's house. This latest incident follows earlier reports of arrests targeting the singer's close associates. It was previously reported that Teddy Afro's spokesperson, his vice manager, and a close friend had already been taken into custody. Currently, a total of seven individuals connected to the artist are detained, with authorities having requested a court remand for them. The scope of the arrests appears to be widening, as reports indicate that even a delivery motorcyclist who ran errands for Teddy Afro's vice manager has also been arrested. #TeddyAfro #Etorika #EthiopianNews #ZeHabesha

Three years ago, on May 6, Voice of Amhara journalist Gobeze Sisay was arrested in #Djibouti and transferred to #Ethiopia under unclear circumstances in a sweeping crackdown on reporting about conflict in the Amhara region. He remains behind bars on terrorism charges that carry a potential death sentence. Gobeze is due to present his defense this month. Gobeze’s continued detention, along with three other journalists also accused of terrorism — Genet Asmamaw, Meskerem Abera, and Dawit Begashaw — underscores the risks facing independent media in Ethiopia and the criminalization of reporting on matters of public interest. @pressfreedom calls for Gobeze’s immediate release and for Ethiopian authorities to stop criminalizing journalism. The challenge with suspicious flights from UAE to Ethiopia is that it isn't clear who the cargo is for - Ethiopia or the RSF. 🇪🇹 is fighting insurgencies in Amhara & Oromia and reportedly preparing for a war with Eritrea & Tigray. Much of this cargo is almost certainly for them.

How did Emirati Bayraktar Akinci UCAVs end up at Bahir Dar Airport 🇪🇹 ? Over the past five months, I have tracked over 146 suspicious UAE cargo/transport flights 🇦🇪, including UAE Air Force transport aircraft, flying into Ethiopia 🇪🇹, many of which landed at Bahir Dar. 1/

#Ethiopia’s fuel shortage crisis This video, recorded last week by Addis Standard along the expressway between Mojo and Bishoftu, captures the scale of Ethiopia’s deepening fuel crisis in stark terms. For drivers, the queues mean lost days and rising costs. For the broader economy, they point to a growing bottleneck that threatens supply chains, trade flows, and the movement of essential goods. Read our “In-depth analysis: The Hormuz Entanglement: Why Ethiopia’s fuel crisis is a perfect storm of war, graft, and reform” published as early as 27 March here: addisstandard.com/the-hormuz-ent…   One month into our reporting, the scene between Mojo and Bishoftu is no longer an isolated snapshot; in the capital Addis Abeba and across the country, similar scene is fast becoming a defining image of an acute fuel shortage gripping the country.

#Ethiopia's Foreign Ministry and its representatives in Saudi Arabia should urgently intervene with their Saudi counterparts to stop these mass executions & at a minimum ensure their nationals receive immediate consular assistance.
Human Rights Watch@hrw

At least 65 Ethiopian migrants are at imminent risk of execution in Saudi Arabia for drug-related offenses. Saudi Arabia’s extensive use of the death penalty is intertwined with fundamental and systemic rights violations. The death sentences should be commuted and the death penalty abolished. hrw.org/news/2026/04/2…
