U.S. Ambassador Holds Talks with TPLF Leadership in Tigray Shire, May 20, 2025 – U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ervin Massinga, met with senior leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) during his visit to shire on May 20 (Ginbot 12, 2017 E.C.). The discussions involved high-level talks between Ambassador Massinga and TPLF officials, including Chairperson Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael and Secretariat Head Fetlework Gebregziabher, among other senior members. The focus was on the current situation in Tigray, encompassing humanitarian conditions and political developments. Ambassador Massinga was briefed on the region’s recovery status following the devastating conflict. This visit comes shortly after the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) revoked the TPLF’s legal status as a political party, citing the party’s failure to hold a general assembly. The TPLF has condemned the ban, asserting that it poses a “serious threat” to the 2022 peace deal that ended two years of conflict in the Tigray region. The party has called for the African Union to mediate with the federal government to address this issue. During the meeting, TPLF officials reiterated their position that the federal government has “failed to fully implement the Pretoria Agreement,” particularly in matters related to the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs), withdrawal of foreign and non-regional forces, and restoration of constitutional order.
