Trust in public officials is an extremely important part of a democratic society. All forms of corruption, from the opaque awarding of grants, to the constant and chronic misuse of parliamentary expenses, to conflicts of interest on the awarding of billions of dollars of public money (people’s hard earned taxes), are corrosive to trust in government and its officers. The NACC was tasked with repairing and strengthening this trust. It failed. It needs reform and complete independence in the merit-based selection of its chief officers.
