@CodeRed_dev It has been like that for years, if not decades.
For example, after Stardew Valley tons of farm games appeared, and that's ten years ago.
You can say the same with Nuclear Throne, FTL, Slay the Spire, Hollow Knight, etc.
English

@CodeRed_dev I mean, don't blame them. Indie dev is already hard not to just follow what works
BLAME THE GAMERS
English

@CodeRed_dev everyone is chasing money.
English

@CodeRed_dev Reduced to? It’s always been. Most indie games are the same as most AAA games in the sense of, it’s all the same. Everything looks the same.
English

@CodeRed_dev A lot of indie developers choose their next projects specifically to ride the popular genre train. Rogue-likes, Survivors, Stream-party games and Souls-likes etc.. Trying to copy that success formula. And the ones that do make original ideas or passion projects get filtered out.
English

@CodeRed_dev It's the same in the book world. Sort of true in the film world. People go where the perceived money is. But there's always a handful of special books/games/films that stand out, and it's those that give us all hope.
English

@CodeRed_dev This is exactly why we built the Steam Map and our Game Gap tool, to move beyond trends & build something unique but validated 👉 game-oracle.com/research-tools…

@CodeRed_dev As an aspiring indie dev this gives me great hope I can stand out in the future. I have zero interest in trend chasing. I am interested in making appealing games people will like, but don’t fear doing my own thing.
English

@CodeRed_dev there are thousands of new, creative and good indie games every year, but you only see the ones that are following a trend, sometimes not even on purpose.
That's an audience behavior / storesite promotion, not an industry issue.

English

@CodeRed_dev Not really, our game Ghoul Fright is one of the weirdest unique ones, we just need people to play it (and actually finish it lol)
English

@CodeRed_dev Trendfest, thanks to "respectable" gamedev influencers telling everyone to spend 2 months making a trendy game instead of their dream games. 🤷♂️ thankfully, my livelihood doesn't depend on the success of my game so I can chase my dreams and have fun doing it.
English

@CodeRed_dev I went outside the bounds but there's 0 algorithm drive, no visibility, I am waving a sign in a field of sign wavers.
English

@CodeRed_dev people need to make a living, one way is to make what is popular...
English

@CodeRed_dev Unfortunately, it seems like many people treat game development as quick cash grab, especially with AI tools. Maybe 5% of developers try to make something original.
English

@CodeRed_dev Yeah, I feel like a lot of game dev advice is to watch for trends, so everything starts to look and feel the same. I feel like trends should be a single data point as you come up with a game idea, not the north star.
English

@CodeRed_dev time for a pixel art roguelite cozy farming sim with fishing and coop store management
English

@CodeRed_dev With how the current world is everyone want to get rich fast before AI steal everything or ruins everything.
English

@CodeRed_dev I think, if we looked back, it always has been. Some new game comes out (or book/movie) and everyone clambers to jump on peoples newfound enjoyment of that (or to release what they already have rdy)
I think now, we just have a larger sample, due to game development being bigger.
English

@CodeRed_dev Many devs are optimizing for streamers it seems
English

@CodeRed_dev I'm just sitting here struggling to make Farmistic fun and playable since 2022 :D
English

@CodeRed_dev Hard to resist when you gotta get paid to keep making games. Market demand.
English

@CodeRed_dev Every game is basically the same, divided in a small bunch of 3-4 genres.
Also now every 3D indie game looks like a PS1 game but worse or looks like the assets are made by someone that just learned how to use a 3D modelling program and has no artistic background.
English

@CodeRed_dev All the games have been the same for countless years now. Golden age of gaming is behind us.
But same for music and movies.
English

@CodeRed_dev An insane thing to say when there is so much variety
English

@CodeRed_dev @theogramme_dev Been that way for next fests. They often have themes that encourage them to market their game a certain way to even get eyes, notice how many bartenders and stardew-likes dominate the cozy segment, but the Latin American showcase last year was amazing due to no such constraint.
English

@CodeRed_dev maybe the amount of trendy ones pushing the distinct ones down also there are lots of early accesses that don't release new demos so they don't appear at next fest too.
