Many people misunderstand the UN sanctions on Eritrea. Let’s clarify the facts:- 1️⃣ In 2009, the United Nations Security Council imposed sanctions on Eritrea. These measures included: •An arms embargo •Travel bans •Asset freezes on specific officials ❗ The sanctions did not ban cement, medicine, fuel, or basic goods. Claims that shortages were caused by UN sanctions are misleading. 2️⃣ In November 2018, the United Nations Security Council lifted the sanctions. One key reason: allegations that Eritrea was supporting al-Shabaab were no longer substantiated, particularly after the 2018 peace agreement with Ethiopia led by Abiy Ahmed. The record is clear:- The sanctions targeted arms and specific officials not food or civilian necessities. Eritreans deserve truth, accountability, and better leadership. Eritrean asylum seekers should not be used as instruments of political leverage. Forcibly returning them to conditions where their safety and fundamental rights may be at risk would have lasting moral and historical consequences.
