These comments clearly illustrate a widespread and deeply caricatured misunderstanding of the terms “Tutsi” and “Hutu.” To clarify: these labels do not refer to any physical or racial difference, as if they described two distinct “races.” Yet this misconception remains common in parts of Congo, largely influenced by pre-1994 Rwandan propaganda… often described as “Nazi-like”, which has been adopted and reshaped locally. In some cases, it is even framed as a supposed “Bantu-Nilotic” divide. In reality, in Rwanda (and Burundi):    •   Everyone is fundamentally “Muntu” (or “Bantu”), since “Bantu” refers to a shared culture, philosophy, and language - not to physical traits.    •   Rwandans and Barundi are, to a large extent, closely related, regardless of whether they are identified as Tutsi or Hutu. This helps explain why, during the Genocide Against the Tutsi, people were killed not because of any objective physical distinction, but because they were listed as targets or identified as such on their identity cards. What we are seeing here reflects a continuation of that same dangerous narrative - one that has been injected in the Congo by the defeated Genocidal Armies that fled into Zaire/Congo in 1994 and their remnants FDLR. This ideology still operates by labeling individuals as “Tutsi” and targeting them accordingly, despite the absence of any clear physical distinction, only because they would “know” who’s who… their ideology has now, after 3 decades of presence, spread, spilled over to many other Congolese populations.
