Mogadishu Was Never Under Omani Rule Some individuals aim to skew Somali history by suggesting that Mogadishu was once under the control of the Omani Sultan of Zanzibar. This claim is untrue and disrespectful to the history of Somali sultanates and their independence. Historical facts show that Mogadishu remained under Somali control from the 4th to the 19th centuries. Charles Guillain, a French traveler who visited the Benadir coast between 1846 and 1848, wrote that the actual ruler was the Somali Sultan Yusuf Mahamud of Geledi, whose power covered Mogadishu, Marka, Barawa, and beyond. Guillain added that the Sultan of Zanzibar had to pay money to the Somali Sultan starting in 1843. This shows that foreign powers knew of Somali independence in the area. When the Omanis wanted to build the Garessa building in Mogadishu in the 1870s, they asked the Somali Sultanate for permission. The building was a commercial building used for Omani-Zanzibar trade not a palace or government office. The Omanis paid customs fees to Somali authorities when they brought items in or out of Mogadishu. If Mogadishu were under Omani control, this permission and taxation would not have happened. This fact disproves the idea that Zanzibar ruled Mogadishu. Somali history includes resistance to foreign invasions, these actions helped form Somali independence. History cannot be changed. Mogadishu and the Benadir coast were independent Somali lands, respected by foreigners who came as traders and business partners, not as rulers. Shame on the succession groups who twist Somali history just to discredit our legacy. We must start asking hard but necessary questions: 1-Why is clan identity valued more than national unity? 2- Why are leaders judged by bloodline, not vision? 3- And why must women prove loyalty to a state that rarely protects or includes them?
Kassim Gabowduale@gabowduale

Somali clan politics whether in Garissa, Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Jigjiga or Djibouti - Is like cancer, it has no cure. A young female politician was pleading with her sub clan about her loyalty as she married a man from another sub clan - and then we wonder what is wrong with Somali

The doctrine of the Hijab in Islam is well intentioned to protect women. Islam does not prescribe the death penalty for non-compliance of wearing the Hijab. Islam is a religion of Peace in which women are highly valued by the Muslim Ummah. Let’s not distort our religion but promote its intentions as dictated by the Holy Quran and the teachings of the Prophet PBUH. #Islamvalueswomen
