It is important to note that the individuals behind this letter are a small group of GSTS leaders who have overstayed their leadership roles without holding elections since 2018. Despite being petitioned by a large number of Tigrayan scholars to reform the organization and cease political activities, they continue to act in violation of their own bylaws and the legal obligations of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered in the State of California. In direct contravention of U.S. federal and state laws governing nonprofit organizations, these few GSTS leaders are accused of unilaterally involving the organization in partisan political activities. For example. in a petition signed by many, they have been accused of positioning GSTS as the 4th coalition member of TIRA in 2022, appointing a former military general, non GSTS member, as Vice President, and assigning GSTS representatives to head some bureaus including Justice, Trade, Technology, Tourism, and Culture. These alleged actions, not only undermine the credibility of GSTS but also violate the principles of neutrality and public trust expected of 501(c)(3) entities. We therefore call upon: • The State of California to investigate and take appropriate legal action against GSTS for breaching nonprofit regulations. • International leaders and foreign ministries to reject the recent GSTS accusations as politically driven and unrepresentative of the broader Tigrayan scholarly community. We reaffirm our support for the TIRA’s efforts to restore good governance, peace, justice and rehabilitation in Tigray. We urge all stakeholders to engage with verified, balanced information and to promote unity and constructive dialogue for the benefit of the Tigrayan people.
