International Law Concerns Regarding the Ban on the Bangladesh Awami League A formal communication issued by the United Nations Special Procedures on 29 December 2025 raises serious concerns regarding measures taken by the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus. The measures include the banning of the Bangladesh Awami League, restrictions on political activity, and the use of counter-terrorism and tribunal laws. The UN experts conclude that these actions may be inconsistent with Bangladeshʼs obligations under international human rights law. First, Tarique Rahman’s stated commitment to the rule of law appears increasingly questionable; Second, the pattern of political targeting initiated under the Yunus regime is not only continuing but intensifying under the BNP Govt; Third, Bangladesh risks entering another prolonged cycle of political retaliation that could destabilize the nation for years to come.
Bangladesh Watch@bdwatch2024

#Bangladesh’s first female Speaker arrested by the #BNP Govt in a trumped-up, politically motivated case stemming from the events of July–August 2024. Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the first woman to serve as Speaker of the National #Parliament, was detained earlier today by the Detective Branch of Police in connection with a “attempted murder” case filed at Lalbagh Police Station in #Dhaka. The case relates to the violence during the Anti-Quota Movement of July–August 2024. DB claims they are examining her alleged “involvement” in incidents of violence and vandalism during that period, an assertion that is as laughable as it is sad. News: thedailystar.net/news/crime-jus… In Bangladesh, arrests of this scale rarely occur without approval from the highest levels of government. It is therefore reasonable to conclude that the current administration led by #TariqueRahman played a decisive role in this action. Notably, under the previous #Yunus-led Interim Govt, former Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque was also arrested in October 2024 under a similar wholesale criminal case tied to the same events. Dr. Chaudhury served as Speaker from April 30, 2013, until her forced resignation on September 2, 2024. A top constitutional lawyer, she also served as Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association from 2014 to 2017, the first ever Bangladeshi to hold the position. This arrest highlights three troubling realities: First, Tarique Rahman’s stated commitment to the rule of law appears increasingly questionable; Second, the pattern of political targeting initiated under the Yunus regime is not only continuing but intensifying under the BNP Govt; Third, Bangladesh risks entering another prolonged cycle of political retaliation that could destabilize the nation for years to come. …. #BangladeshCrisis @commonwealthsec @IPUparliament @hrw @amnestysasia @meeganguly @PearsonElaine @ESandersFCDO @volker_turk @UNHumanRights @StateDRL @AgnesCallamard @justiceinfonet @IBAHRI @forum_asia @article19org @FortifyRights @BonaveroIHR @IHRF_English

⁨Running a business in the dark. Paying rent. No relief. Power cuts, rising costs and silence from those in charge. People aren’t asking for luxury. Just clarity, fairness and a chance to survive. ⁨📷⁩ ⁨The Helpless Cry of a Lawyer and the Family of a Deceased Awami League Leader ——— A.K. Azad, General Secretary of Ward No. 20 Jubo League in Sabujbagh, was a suspect in two cases—one under the Anti-Terrorism Act and another under Section 326 of the Penal Code. On March 3, Mr. Azad suffered a brain stroke while in jail custody. His appointed lawyer mentioned the matter before the Honorable High Court Division on March 8, 9, and 10, informing the court that the accused had suffered a stroke and was admitted to the ICU of Tajuddin Medical College Hospital. Considering his critical condition, the lawyer requested an expedited hearing. However, the Honorable Court did not take the matter into consideration. On March 11, his bail was granted as per the scheduled order. He was released on bail on March 18. After his release, his family arranged for medical treatment, but according to doctors, it was already too late. Yesterday, Mr. A.K. Azad passed away. His wife and young children cried out in anguish, believing that the lawyer had failed to properly convey to the judge that Azad was in the ICU—because, in their view, no judge could be so inhumane. As a lawyer, I have no answer to this accusation. I can only say to the honorable judges: people still have unwavering faith in you. Please listen to the lawyers and take appropriate action. Lawyers do not seek personal favors or mercy from the court; they simply represent individuals seeking justice. What greater shame is there than a suspect in an Anti-Terrorism Act and Section 326 case having to seek relief from the High Court under such circumstances? #AwamiLeague #HumanRights #Bangladesh

During the July–August (2024) violence, allegations were made that Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was involved in an attempted murder. Does anyone truly believe this? Yet, she has been arrested in such a false case. The whole world knows these are fabricated cases. What is the objective of those who filed such false charges? Will the families of those who lost their lives in the July–August violence receive justice through these cases? Whatever the intention of those who filed false cases against us may be, it is certainly not justice. Who were behind the killings carried out using 7.62 caliber bullets and sniper rifles? During July–August, numerous police officers, Awami League activists, and many protesters lost their lives. I have said before and I reiterate now: there was infiltration by a third party among the protesters. This third party was also responsible for many of the killings. I believe that every death must be investigated and justice must be ensured. However, we are not witnessing any impartial investigation or fair judicial process. Instead, these deaths are being used as political tools, and there is ample evidence of case-trading surrounding these incidents. Filing false cases for monetary profit or cheap political gain is both unethical and illegal. We are maintaining a list of those who have filed these false cases. Remember, it does not take long for times to change. Alongside ensuring justice for all killings, those who have filed false cases will also be brought under the law, Insha’Allah. — Mohammad Ali Arafat

Shirin Sharmin, the Speaker, has been arrested in a fabricated July case. According to the case statement, on August 5 she was also on the streets alongside the police against the July militants. Then what about the incident where the army rescued her from inside Parliament at 2:30 a.m.? When a country no longer has laws or the rule of law, it descends into extreme disorder. Bangladesh is being deliberately pushed in that direction. Today, this drama has been staged to divert attention from the public’s outcry over fuel, gas, electricity, fertilizer, and essential commodities. The media is busy covering Shirin Sharmin’s arrest, as if everything in the country is normal. The people will respond to all of this very soon. Repression and oppression cannot keep people subdued for long. #Bangladesh #BangladeshCrisis

Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is the first female Speaker of Bangladesh National Parliament. She is a highly educated, polite, humble, and graceful woman. Yet, the way they have treated this innocent woman must be answered one day. When #TariqueRahman returned to #Bangladesh after nearly 18 years in exile, he promised the nation that he had a “plan.” In less than two months into his government, that plan is beginning to take shape; and it is raising serious concerns. Rather than advancing long-discussed reform agendas, the #BNP Govt appears to be moving in the opposite direction: shelving key governance reforms while continuing, and in some cases intensifying, the persecution of political opponents. A BNP-led parliamentary special committee has reportedly recommended against ratifying 20 ordinances introduced during the #Yunus-led Interim Govt. Many of these measures were widely seen as essential for strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring accountability. They included provisions aimed at safeguarding judicial independence, preventing enforced disappearances, and reinforcing the roles of critical bodies such as the Anti-Corruption Commission and the National Human Rights Commission. News:  thedailystar.net/opinion/editor… Yet, in a striking contrast, one of the most controversial legal changes from the Interim Govt period, the amendment to the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, is not only being retained but potentially expanded. This amendment grants the executive sweeping powers to unilaterally and indefinitely suspend the activities of any org, including political parties. It has already drawn sustained criticism from #humanrights advocates, including multiple experts affiliated with the @UN_HRC, who warned about its broad scope and potential for abuse. See: spcommreports.ohchr.org/TMResultsBase/… Recent reports suggest that the BNP Govt is not merely preserving these powers but strengthening them further by introducing penalties for violations. The implications are significant: not only could political parties, such as the #AwamiLeague, face continued bans under this framework, but individuals expressing support for such groups, whether online or offline, could also face criminal sanctions.  Taken together, these developments suggest a deeply concerning trajectory: - Reform initiatives aimed at improving governance and accountability are being discarded;   - Expansive executive powers are being preserved and reinforced; and - Legal tools are increasingly being used to target political opposition and dissent. …. #BangladeshCrisis @State_SCA @usembassydhaka @AusHCBangladesh @UKinBangladesh @NorwayAmbBD @SwedeninBD @DKAmbBD @UNinBangladesh @UNDP @WorldBankSAsia @volker_turk @FRauBangladesh @CanHCBangladesh @GERonSouthAsia @FCDOGovUK

The face of Bangladesh today: A republic turned into a prison! In a heartbreaking and deeply disturbing scene, former Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury appears visibly exhausted, distressed, and broken as she looks upward with tears in her eyes, her head covered in a light blue floral shawl. Sources close to her claim she has endured prolonged physical and mental torture while in government custody. Once one of the highest constitutional office holders in the country, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury’s current condition has shocked many and raised serious questions about the state of democracy, rule of law, and political revenge in post-uprising Bangladesh. Her arrest and subsequent jailing have been widely criticized as part of a series of politically motivated actions targeting leaders and supporters of the previous government. This image has quickly become a symbol of how far Bangladesh has allegedly fallen — from a vibrant democracy to what many now describe as a political prison where dissent and past service are being punished. The people of Bangladesh demand justice, transparency, and an immediate end to what appears to be systematic persecution of political opponents. #Bangladesh #ShirinSharminChowdhury #PoliticalPersecution #DemocracyUnderAttack #RuleOfLaw #JulyMassUprising #BangladeshPrison #HumanRights #PoliticalArrests #FormerSpeaker #JusticeForShirin #FreePoliticalPrisoners #BangladeshCrisis #StopTorture @ChiefAdviserGoB @Yunus_Centre @trahmanbnp @Drsr_Official @UNHumanRights @UN_SPExperts @AmnestyInternational @HRW @hrcbm @albd1971 @OdhikarBD @BD_HumanRights @IntlCrisisGroup @EUinBD @USSDHR @StateDept @UKinBangladesh @sajeebwazed
