A Note on “Energy Defense” and Long-Term Strategic Thinking We look at the current geopolitical map, the weaponization of energy, the tension around global chokepoints, the shifts in supply chains, and it is tempting to think we are just living through chaotic, reactive times. I mean partially, there is always that reactive and impulsive element of surprise, but…. I've been digging through a decade’s worth of doctrinal papers and seminar archives from the U.S. defense and think-tank establishment. I am working on a longer piece tying this all together, but I want to share a brief window into what I am finding. When you cross-reference documents from the U.S. Army War College, the Naval Postgraduate School, and the Brookings Institution, a weirdly coherent picture emerges. There is no need for a smoky-room conspiracy or a centralized master plan; rather what I found was a growing institutional consensus at work, often through the pathway of military academia. The strategic intent has been articulated, rehearsed and normalized in official spaces for more than a decade. Here is what these resources imply about the reality we are living in right now: The Shale Revolution was a geopolitical inflection point. A critical juncture. According to Army War College analyses, the moment the U.S. could possibly achieve energy dominance via shale, the global strategy could shift. For decades, American doctrine was built around protecting the flow of Middle Eastern oil to the West. But shale allowed the U.S. to fundamentally pivot. Energy was no longer a domestic vulnerability to be defended; the option opened up for energy to become an offensive capability to be wielded against a rising Russia and China. The shale revolution created room to rewire alliances, weaponize exports, and ride out disruption that would have been unthinkable when the US was more import‑dependent. (Indeed, the other acknowledged pathway was focusing on the interior and just developing the US…) The "Reverse Oil Weapon." We are all familiar with the 1970s "Oil Weapon", OPEC producers embargoing Western consumers. But Navy post-graduate seminars from a decade ago explicitly thought about the exact opposite. They openly discussed the strategic utility of the U.S. hypothetically blocking the Strait of Hormuz itself. The goal? A "Reverse Oil Weapon" (not my words, their words) designed to intentionally financially starve adversarial producers and deliberately choke off the energy supply to strategic rivals. So, this finding doesn’t equal a launch order but it implies something about the current chaos in the Gulf: US‑initiated energy strangulation became thinkable, gamed, and framed as legitimate in these circles. In fact, “energy is power” was the conclusion of that particular seminar. The Strategy of Mutual Denial. An interesting report from Brookings openly discussed "mutual denial" between the U.S. and China as a form of strategic but hostile equilibrium. It reduces the global chess match to a standoff over critical resource arteries, essentially holding the industrial capacity of the multipolar world hostage to U.S. naval and financial chokepoints. (What’s more, the US navy and military academic institutions have been aware since at least a decade about China’s energy-related preparations and plans we are seeing play out now.) Put these strands together and a pattern emerges: Energy is treated as a primary weapon system in great power competition. Blocking or threatening chokepoints like Hormuz is openly theorized as a US move. The shale boom is understood inside the US security establishment as a structural enabler for more aggressive energy statecraft (even though a peaceful pathway could have been chosen). China–US relations are increasingly framed in terms of mutual energetic denial. And honestly, there’s more, e.g. vis-a-vis Russia and Europe, the Arctic, and basically every energy node on the globe. What this implies is interesting to say the least. The current fracturing of the global energy market, the sanctions regimes, and the proxy conflicts surrounding vital transit corridors are the realization of a strategic posture that the U.S. military (educational institutions to be precise) and think-tank apparatus began developing the moment the shale revolution took off. Again, I’m not talkig about a conspirational plan nor a strategy of military genius by an almighty empire, but a simple sociological process: When naval, army and think‑tank ecosystems have spent a decade socializing officers and analysts into the idea that energy disruptions, blockades and states of denial are acceptable tools of policy, then today’s “crises” become opportunities to apply what has already been thought and taught. No 4D chess, just simple institutional coherence and dynamics: a system that thinks, plans, and adapts over decades with more or less the same worldview. Institutional memory that shapes decisions is what is at play here. It also means that a lot of the debate is looking in the wrong place. People ask: “Can the US really dominate global energy volumes?” and point, correctly, to hard constraints. But the material is in practical terms about leverage: who can absorb price shocks, who controls the valves and insurance, who can turn a regional disruption into a strategic gain and who cannot. They say as much. In fact, they are aware of the potential effects both on the world and on their own population, the “poor” (their words). I am currently compiling these findings.
